Job summary

Mott MacDonald is seeking an experienced Principal Design Manager to lead the design, integration and delivery of rail stations and civil engineering projects across the UK. You will mentor engineers and shape the local rail civil engineering team within our UK-wide practice.

The role focuses on embedding technical excellence, managing multi-discipline designs, and building strong client relationships, with travel across the UK to support project delivery.

Qualifications

• Degree qualified in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
• Chartered Engineer (CEng) or IEng with ICE or equivalent professional institution.
• Extensive experience within the UK rail sector delivering multi-disciplinary rail projects.
• Proven leadership of technical delivery on complex rail projects in detailed design and design-and-build environments.
• Strong communication, leadership and influencing skills.
• Experience mentoring engineers and supporting the development of technical teams.
• Experience acting as Contractor’s Responsible Engineer or Contractor’s Engineering Manager.
• Willingness and ability to travel across the UK and beyond to support clients.
• Knowledge of railway structures, stations, bridges and rail systems.

Responsibilities

• Lead and oversee the technical delivery of rail civil engineering projects across the UK with a focus on integrated design across multi-discipline teams.
• Coordinate input from multiple rail design discipline engineers and specialists across the business.
• Prepare, review and deliver high-quality engineering solutions that are safe, practical and sustainable.
• Act as a focal point for clients for the technical delivery of projects.
• Develop and maintain relationships with stakeholders and rail discipline leads.
• Collaborate with business development teams to identify and pursue new opportunities.
• Support project managers to achieve programme, budget and quality objectives.
• Identify and mitigate project risks ensuring right-first-time integrated delivery.
• Mentor and develop Early Career Professionals and other team members.
• Promote technical excellence and knowledge sharing within the rail civil engineering team.
