Job summary

Mott MacDonald is seeking a Principal Civil Engineer to join the Rail Stations and Civil Engineering team. Lead technical delivery on major rail projects and mentor engineers while developing client relationships across the UK.

The role requires Chartered Engineer status, a civil engineering degree, and extensive rail delivery experience, with travel across the UK. Hybrid working is supported and valued in this role.

Qualifications

• Degree qualified in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
• Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng) with ICE or equivalent professional institution.
• Experience acting as a Contractor’s Responsible Engineer on rail infrastructure projects – detailed design and design and build.
• Strong understanding of railway structures, stations, bridges, and rail systems.
• Excellent communication, leadership and influencing skills.
• Experience mentoring engineers and developing technical teams.
• Delivery experience of civil engineering in multidisciplinary railway projects.
• Knowledge of Network Rail standards and project delivery requirements.
• Site, construction and commissioning experience in a rail environment.
• Willingness to travel across the UK to support clients and project delivery.
• Experience with heritage, listed, or operational railway structures.

Responsibilities

• Lead and oversee the technical delivery of rail civil engineering projects across the UK with emphasis on technical excellence.
• Prepare, review and deliver high-quality engineering solutions that are safe, practical, sustainable and deliver client outcomes.
• Promote technical excellence and knowledge sharing within the rail civil engineering team.
• Support multidisciplinary design teams ensuring integration across civil, structural, geotechnical, architectural and rail systems.
• Identify and mitigate project risks with effective solutions.
• Support project managers in achieving programme, budget and quality objectives.
• Collaborate with business development to identify and pursue new opportunities.
• Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients and stakeholders.
