Job description

Join Netherwood Academy as a Lead Practitioner of Maths!

About You:Do you want to make a lasting impact on our students, many of whom are disadvantaged, and rapidly accelerate their progress? Do you want to work in a school where you are free to teach, with impeccable student behaviour and minimal bureaucracy? If so, Netherwood Academy, part of the Astrea Academy Trust, is the place for you. We are an 11-16 academy set in a stunning £35 million campus, currently in an exciting period of development. We are looking for a passionate and ambitious Lead Practitioner of Maths to join our team.

About the Role:As Lead Practitioner, you will excel in the classroom and be instrumental in supporting colleagues within Maths and across the academy. You will enhance their effectiveness through mentoring, coaching, professional development, and challenge. The demands of the role are high, and this is reflected in the salary attached. Ideally, candidates should have experience in middle leadership or beyond in a school setting.

Ideal Candidate:We are seeking an experienced and outstanding classroom practitioner with a track record of strong outcomes and supporting the development of colleagues. The role involves a significant Maths timetable (70%) but includes relief from teaching to work closely with the Quality of Education Team to develop colleagues to be outstanding in their teaching. We need someone who can walk the walk and be a beacon of excellent practice, possessing the intellectual rigor and professional credibility to drive up standards across the academy.

Our Approach:We are committed to a knowledge-rich curriculum and a traditional approach to teaching, behaviour, and culture. Influenced by Lemov’s ‘Teach Like A Champion’, Rosenshine, and cognitive science, we create a scholarly culture that is warm, strict, disciplined, and joyful. Our focus is on impeccable behaviour, allowing teachers to teach and students to learn effectively.

Our Vision:We provide an inclusive, aspirational, and academic education for all students, ensuring they can thrive and lead successful lives. We are ambitious for every child, regardless of background, prior attainment, or needs. We work tirelessly to help students overcome barriers and flourish.

What We Offer:

  • Extensive support and progression opportunities
  • A knowledge-rich curriculum with collaborative planning and shared resources
  • Excellent support from the Astrea Trust Central team
  • A feedback policy focused on whole class feedback
  • Disruption-free learning with a ‘warm/strict’ behaviour system
  • Highly visible and supportive senior leaders
  • Centralised detentions, including homework detentions
  • No formal graded lesson observations, just ongoing instructional coaching
  • Excellent CPD, career development, and promotion opportunities across the Astrea South Yorkshire region
  • Opportunity to complete NPQs
  • An unrivalled professional progression model

What We Are Looking For:

  • A highly effective professional who can motivate and encourage colleagues
  • Someone aligned with our values and mission, who will thrive in our culture
  • A passionate believer in the potential of all children, regardless of their starting point
