Job summary

EMBL-EBI in Hinxton, Cambridgeshire, seeks a Team Leader to guide the Plant Genomics and Variation effort within Ensembl and EVA. You will head ~15 staff from bioinformatics and software development, delivering data resources, tools, and community engagement across crops, invertebrates, and genomic variation.

You will work with EMBL-EBI leadership to shape strategy, collaborate with international partners, and drive high-impact data services for researchers worldwide.

Qualifications

• PhD degree in a relevant field (bioinformatics, life sciences, computing or statistics) or equivalent relevant experience.
• At least 6 years’ experience in bioinformatics/genomics applied to plant science/breeding.
• Experience working with a genomics research community, ideally crops.
• Demonstrable track record working with genetic variation data.
• Experience working with big data (gigabyte to terabyte scale).
• Hands-on experience with AI tools.

Responsibilities

• Lead the EVA resource and Ensembl crop, invertebrate and genetic variation aspects of the Ensembl project.
• Coordinate with other Team Leaders and EMBL-EBI leadership to deliver integrated systems and data flows.
• Engage with external collaborators and community standards bodies (AgBioData, GA4GH).
• Develop and deliver EMBL’s strategy within EMBL Faculty.
• Identify funding opportunities and apply for external grants.
