Lead Nurse Professional Development - OTDT (Band 8a)

Job Summary

This role is essential to the success of the Professional Development and Education Team within OTDT. Workstream leadership, managing change, influencing and motivating the team are key attributes to the success of this role. Effective diary management and prioritisation of competing demands are essential elements to the success of this leadership role. There will be the requirement to align with operational teams and focus on key performance metrics. The role involves project management, service development, strategy writing, objective setting and education evaluation and continuous improvement.

The post holder will be expected to be accessible to the professional development team working collaboratively with operational teams with an ability to undertake necessary conversations to improve and manage performance. Maintaining and promoting good working relationships and stakeholder engagement is essential to achieving OTDT goals and objectives.

An awareness of budget management, constraints and spending controls, the post holder will be engaged with recruitment and development of team members, utilising coaching, debriefing and feedback skills.

Main duties of the job

As a key member of the Senior Nursing Team within OTDT, the post holder will play an essential role:

  • Collaborate with the Head of Education and Professional Development to create and implement an education and training strategy for Organ and Tissue Donation Team Specialist Nurses (SNs) that maximizes their potential and supports a safe, effective workforce.
  • Develop and deliver education and professional development programs for SNs and support staff in alignment with NHSBT, OTDT Corporate Strategy, and national nursing initiatives.
  • Ensure SN education adapts to service and workforce changes, establishing systems that demonstrate value for money and align with organizational objectives.
  • Lead specific projects alongside the Head of Education and Professional Development, focusing on service improvement strategies that meet clinical and corporate goals.
  • Establish revised policies and clinical standards to enhance evidence-based practices.
  • Network externally to identify best practices and training opportunities in support of the directorate's strategic direction.
  • Engage in research and evaluation within donation and transplantation, including formal programs and audits.
  • Facilitate the management and implementation of change with Regional Heads of Nursing and Lead Nurses.
  • Participate in an on-call rota (approximately 1 in 12) to maintain professional competence, providing coaching, mentoring, and supervision of SNs, while ensuring balanced attention to all Organ Donation priorities.

Willingness and ability to undertake travel and spend time away from base to meet the requirements of the post (with appropriate prior notice).

About You

Experience and Knowledge

  • Awareness of current professional issues and developments within organ donation, nursing and the NHS.
  • Expert in Approaching families for Consent / Authorisation
  • Ability to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of own and others clinical practice.
  • Expert in the facilitation of the donation process.
  • Experience of working within the organ donation services as a specialist within the last 5 years.
  • Demonstrable post registration experience within a senior nursing role.
  • Significant leadership and management experience
  • Experience of working with information technology using Microsoft Office packages (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams and PowerPoint

Qualifications and Training

  • Registered Nurse with current Nursing and Midwifery Council registration (which must be maintained) as Registered Nurse Adult or Paediatric Nurse
  • MSc level qualification in a relevant health care or education field or equivalent work based knowledge and experience along with commitment to study to MSc level.
  • Demonstrable specialist knowledge in organ donation
  • Teaching knowledge / qualification to ENB 998 level or equivalent.
  • Possess a valid driving licence allowing the holder to drive in the UK.
  • Demonstrates commitment to own continued professional development (CPD)
