Job summary

British Steel is seeking a Lead Engineering Planner to head the maintenance planning activities within the Internal Logistics HRS team in Scunthorpe. You will develop and maintain maintenance plans, allocate critical work, and ensure safety and reliability across assets.

The role requires strong SAP experience, excellent organisational skills and the ability to lead cross-functional teams to improve asset performance and drive continuous improvement.

Qualifications

• Significant experience in maintenance planning, engineering or reliability roles.
• Strong understanding of maintenance management systems, ideally SAP.
• Ability to coordinate activities, manage priorities and drive work completion.

Responsibilities

Role – Lead Engineering Planner

Salary – £42,500 p.a

What you need to know about the role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Lead Planner to join our Heavy Repair Services (HRS) team in Internal Logistics based in Scunthorpe.

In this role, you will be responsible for leading the planning, coordination and continuous improvement of maintenance activities across rolling stock, static engines, generators, pumps and workshop infrastructure. You will manage maintenance plans through SAP, ensuring work is effectively prioritised, scheduled and completed safely to support asset reliability and operational performance.

Your primary responsibilities will include developing and maintaining maintenance plans, allocating P1 and P2 work activities, managing SHE-critical tasks, and overseeing work completed through HRS work centres and planner groups. You will work closely with engineers, plant managers and operational teams to ensure maintenance activities are delivered efficiently and in line with business requirements.

The role also plays a key part in driving engineering excellence and continuous improvement. You will support the development of maintenance strategies, monitor performance through agreed KPIs, identify opportunities to improve reliability and asset performance, and help embed best practice principles such as CAMF, Autonomous Maintenance and MTI workshop methodologies.

Alongside planning responsibilities, you will provide technical guidance to the static engine team, oversee servicing programmes, manage contractor activities, support compliance programmes, and ensure statutory inspections and safety-critical activities are completed in accordance with company standards.

This is a varied and challenging position that offers the opportunity to influence maintenance performance across a wide range of critical assets whilst developing your own capability as an Improvement Engineer.

What we need to know about you

To be considered for this position, you should have significant experience within maintenance planning, engineering, asset management or reliability-focused roles in a heavy industrial, rail, manufacturing or engineering environment.

You will have a strong understanding of maintenance planning principles and be confident working with maintenance management systems, ideally SAP. Experience of coordinating maintenance activities, managing priorities, allocating resources and driving work completion is essential.

You should have excellent organisational and communication skills with the ability to work effectively with engineers, managers, contractors and operational stakeholders. The successful candidate will be able to analyse asset performance data, identify improvement opportunities and implement practical solutions to improve reliability and efficiency.

Knowledge and experience of safety management systems, risk assessments, statutory compliance activities and continuous improvement methodologies would be advantageous.

Ideally you will possess:

• A relevant engineering qualification (Mechanical, Electrical or related discipline).


• Experience using SAP or similar maintenance management systems.


• Knowledge of asset management and reliability improvement principles.


• Experience coordinating contractor activities and compliance programmes.


• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.


• A commitment to health, safety and continuous improvement.


• The ability to lead, coach and support engineering teams.

Knowledge of rolling stock, static engines, generators, pumps or heavy industrial plant would be beneficial but is not essential, as training and development opportunities will be provided.
