Job summary

Wood is seeking an Instrumentation Lead (Discipline Construction Lead) for a 12-month contract on Teesside, at the project site office in Redcar. The role oversees instrumentation construction activities by EPC and PCC contractors, with occasional travel to Paris and other EPC facilities.

This full-time, site-based position requires strong leadership, safety, and quality focus, coordinating with EPC Discipline Instrumentation Leads, Equipment Leads and SIP Leads to deliver commissioning-ready

Qualifications

  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary teams on large EPC projects.
  • Ability to oversee construction planning and execution while maintaining safety and quality standards.
  • Proven track record in instrumentation installation, testing and handover processes.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills to manage contractor interfaces.

Responsibilities

  • Overseeing instrumentation installation, containment, cabling, testing and energisation.
  • Coordinate with EPC Discipline Instrumentation Leads and Equipment Leads for hook‑ups to equipment.
  • Monitor contractor performance for safety, quality and schedule adherence; raise NCRs when needed.
  • Review contractor proposals, method statements and construction work packs for instrumentation activities.
  • Support construction planning and progress reporting with accurate daily/weekly/monthly updates.
  • Participate in construction walkdowns and punch list management as part of mechanical completion.

Wood is currently recruiting for a Instrumentation Lead (Discipline Construction Lead) on a 12 month contract basis. The role will be based on Teesside at the project site office at Redcar. If required, you will be expected to conduct occasional travel to EPC contractor’s design offices in Paris and potential EPC Contractor facilities in the UK and overseas. It will be a full‑time site‑based role with a Monday–Friday site working pattern overseeing all construction areas on the project. Limited but regular overtime may be required in keeping with EPC working patterns.

The Role

As the Instrumentation Lead, you will be responsible for overseeing all instrumentation construction activities executed by the EPC and PCC contractors.

  • Turnover through to Mechanical Completion and Client Handover
  • Cleanliness, preservation, and readiness for commissioning
  • Leadership of client standards for “build it tight” and “build it clean”
  • Coordination with EPC Discipline Instrumentation Leads for all instrumentation scope
  • Coordination with Equipment Leads for hook‑up to rotating and static equipment
  • Coordination with SIP Lead for scaffolding requirements
  • Coordinate with Pre‑Commissioning and Commissioning Leads as part of a systemised completion and handover
  • Coordinating with HSE Leads for ensuring testing and energisation is assessed, planned, and conducted using suitable methodology with appropriate exclusion and access controls
  • Ensuring compliance with client specifications, project specifications, safety standards, and quality requirements
  • Ensuring EPC reporting is compliant and reflects the status of the work
  • Participate in Self Verification and Oversight process
  • Provide Client input to constructability and readiness process
  • Provide oversight for the field execution of instrumentation works from installation through to mechanical completion and handover
  • Ensure all instrumentation installation is installed, tested, and pre‑commissioned in accordance with project requirements
  • Monitor contractor performance for technical compliance, cleanliness, quality standards, and schedule adherence; raise NCRs where necessary
  • Coordinate resolution of technical queries (TQs), deviations, and change requests with engineering and contractor teams
  • Review contractor proposals, method statements and construction work packs for instrumentation activities
  • Support construction planning and progress reporting, ensuring accurate daily/weekly/monthly updates from the contractor
  • Participate in construction walkdowns and punch list management as part of mechanical completion
  • Ensure discipline handover documentation/dossiers are complete and meet project requirements
  • Identify and mitigate equipment specific risks, applying lessons learned and best practices throughout the project lifecycle
  • Collaborate with other discipline leads and the main contractor to ensure seamless integration of instrumentation with other installation
  • Lead “build it tight” and “build it clean” to drive contractor compliance

Expected Qualifications
  • HNC or higher in Instrumentation or Control Engineering or a related discipline is preferred. Consideration will be given if you have suitable experience in a similar role.
  • Demonstrable experience in a similar role on large‑scale EPC projects overseeing/managing instrumentation installation including instruments, field distribution panels, containment, cabling, glanding, preservation, punch out, walk down, turnover and handover.
  • Proven skills with the ability to coordinate multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to oversee construction planning and execution while maintaining safety and quality standards.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Familiarity with multi‑discipline interfaces and construction sequencing.
  • Experience in energy transition or large‑scale industrial projects.
