Job summary

Digital Waffle in the United Kingdom is seeking a Lead Software Engineer to own the backend and shape the platform's next phase. This hands-on leadership role requires deep C++ experience and mentoring across teams.

You'll work closely with Product, Front End and R&D teams to improve platform performance, engineering quality and development velocity, while driving AI adoption and secure coding practices. Hybrid role in Leamington Spa with 2–3 days onsite.

Qualifications

Lead/tech-lead experience in backend systems.
Expert C++ with STL knowledge.
Experience designing scalable APIs.
Mentoring engineers and leading teams.
Experience with AI-powered tooling and AI adoption.

Responsibilities

Lead the development and evolution of scalable backend systems and APIs.
Take technical ownership of backend projects from planning through production delivery.
Collaborate with Product, Architects and Engineers to define requirements.
Mentor backend engineers and support their technical progression.
Drive improvements in architecture, performance, reliability and observability.
Identify bottlenecks and optimise queries and system performance.
Evaluate and implement AI-powered tools to improve productivity and quality.
Shape adoption of LLMs and modern AI engineering practices.
Lead sprint planning, stand-ups and retrospectives with Product and Delivery teams.
Champion secure coding and code review practices.
