Our people are driven by strong values based on safety, insight, and collaboration.

The Opportunity

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Lead Bridge Engineer to join our Amey Consulting team in Manchester, Newcastle, or Sheffield, with shared office space, attending when necessary, and remaining days working remotely. We welcome applications from Lead Engineers across this region.

Our Structures Team designs some of the largest civil engineering and infrastructure projects across Scotland, with cumulative values exceeding £1bn.

Amey manages both the Southwest and Northeast Trunk Road Network Management contracts, awarded in 2020 and 2022 respectively, each extending up to 12 years. We also have a diverse portfolio of major roads, bridges, and transportation projects with Transport Scotland, Local Authorities, and contractors nationwide.

These long-term contracts offer excellent opportunities for technical, engineering, and professional development at all career stages.

The role

As a Lead Bridge Engineer, you'll play a key role within the Design team and alongside Transport Scotland. You will support your Design Team Leader on various civil schemes, lead projects, and mentor junior designers.

Responsibilities include:

  • Leading a team to produce technically sound engineering solutions, complying with standards and client requirements.
  • Preparing and checking designs, calculations, drawings, and documentation to meet quality, cost, and schedule criteria.
  • Overseeing junior staff and taking responsibility for their work.
  • Managing project budgets and controlling costs.
  • Liaising with clients and suppliers, attending meetings, and responding to queries.
  • Contributing to bids and work-winning activities.
  • Promoting health and safety practices within the team.

What you will bring to us:

  • Experience and expertise in civil engineering, likely from a Senior Engineer role or similar.
  • Ability to produce compliant, high-quality engineering solutions independently and supervise others.
  • Knowledge of health, safety, and welfare management, including relevant regulations.
  • Experience acting as the main engineering contact, e.g., CRE for Network Rail schemes.
  • Understanding of design and specification processes, with the ability to review designs.
  • Proficiency with relevant software and analytical tools.
  • Strong understanding of CDM and risk management.
  • Ability to act as Principal Designer where appropriate.
  • Leadership and team management skills, capable of managing a medium-sized team.
  • Incorporated or Chartered status, or equivalent, is desirable and may be essential for some contracts.
