The Opportunity

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Lead Bridge Engineer to join our Amey Consulting team in Manchester, Newcastle, Sheffield, with shared office space, attending when necessary, and remaining days working remotely. We welcome applications from Lead Engineers across these regions.

Our Structures Team is involved in designing some of the largest civil engineering projects across Scotland, with values exceeding £1bn.

Amey manages long-term contracts for the Southwest and Northeast Trunk Road Networks, with opportunities for technical, engineering, and professional development across a diverse portfolio of projects involving roads, bridges, and transportation infrastructure.

The role

As a Lead Bridge Engineer, you will support and lead design projects, mentoring junior staff and liaising with clients such as Transport Scotland. Responsibilities include:

• Leading a team to produce technically sound engineering solutions in compliance with standards and client requirements.
• Preparing and checking designs, calculations, and documentation.
• Overseeing junior staff and managing project budgets and costs.
• Liaising with clients and suppliers, attending meetings, and contributing to bids and work-winning activities.
• Promoting health and safety within the team.

What you will bring to us:

• Experience in a senior engineering role or equivalent with technical expertise.
• Ability to produce and check engineering designs independently.
• Knowledge of health, safety, and welfare management, including CDM and risk assessment.
• Experience acting as a main engineering contact or Principal Designer.
• Strong supervisory skills and professional accreditation (Incorporated or Chartered).
