The Opportunity

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Lead Bridge Engineer to join our Amey Consulting team in Manchester, Newcastle, Sheffield, with shared office space, attending when necessary, and remaining days working remotely. We welcome applications from Lead Engineers across this region.

Our Structures Team at Amey Consulting is involved in designing some of the largest civil engineering and infrastructure projects across Scotland, with cumulative values exceeding £1bn.

Amey manages the Southwest and Northeast Trunk Road Network Management contracts, awarded in 2020 and 2022 respectively, both extendable up to 12 years. We also undertake a diverse portfolio of major roads, bridges, and transportation projects with Transport Scotland, Local Authorities, and contractors nationwide.

These long-term contracts offer excellent opportunities for technical, engineering, and professional growth at all career stages to be involved in Scotland’s arterial road network projects.

The role

Our Lead Bridge Engineers are key members of the Design team, working closely with Transport Scotland. As a Lead Senior Engineer, you will support your Design Team Leader on various civil schemes, lead projects, and mentor junior designers.

Responsibilities include:

  • Leading a team to produce technically sound engineering solutions that meet all relevant standards and client requirements.
  • Preparing and checking designs, calculations, drawings, and documentation to ensure quality, cost, and schedule compliance.
  • Overseeing junior staff and taking responsibility for their work.
  • Managing project budgets and controlling costs to ensure commercial success.
  • Liaising with clients and suppliers, attending meetings, and responding to queries.
  • Contributing to bids and work-winning activities.
  • Promoting health and safety practices within the team.

What you will bring to us:

  • Experience and expertise in civil engineering, likely in a Senior Engineer role or similar.
  • Ability to produce compliant, high-quality engineering solutions independently and supervise others.
  • Experience with health, safety, and welfare management, including regulations and systems.
  • Capability to act as a main engineering contact, e.g., CRE for Network Rail projects.
  • Knowledge of design and specification processes, with ability to review and advise.
  • Proficiency with relevant software and analytical tools.
  • Understanding of CDM and risk management, with experience in hazard communication and mitigation.
  • Potential to act as Principal Designer on projects.
  • People management skills, capable of leading a medium-sized technical team.
  • Incorporated or Chartered status or equivalent is desirable and may be essential for some contracts.
