Our people are driven by a set of strong values, based on safety, insight and collaboration.

The Opportunity

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Lead Bridge Engineer to join our Amey Consulting team in Manchester, Newcastle, Sheffield, with shared office space, attending when necessary, and remaining days working remotely. We welcome applications from Lead Engineers across this region.

Our Amey Consulting Structures Team is involved in designing some of the largest civil engineering and associated infrastructure projects across Scotland, with cumulative values in excess of £1bn.

Amey manages both the Southwest and Northeast Trunk Road Network Management contracts, awarded in 2020 and 2022 respectively. These are 8-year contracts, extendable up to 12 years. We also have a diverse portfolio of major roads, bridges, and transportation and civil design projects with Transport Scotland, Local Authorities, and contractors nationwide.

These long-term contracts offer excellent opportunities for technical, engineering, and professional development at all career stages to be involved in some of Scotland’s most exciting engineering projects.

The role

Our Lead Bridge Engineers are key members of the Design team, working alongside Transport Scotland. As a Lead Senior Engineer, you will support your Design Team Leader on various Civil schemes, lead projects, and mentor junior designers.

Responsibilities include:

  • Leading a team to produce technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant standards and client requirements.
  • Preparing and checking designs, calculations, drawings, and documentation to meet quality, cost, and schedule criteria.
  • Overseeing junior staff actions and taking responsibility for their work.
  • Managing project budgets and controlling costs to ensure commercial success.
  • Liaising with clients and suppliers, attending meetings, and responding to queries.
  • Contributing to bid preparations and work-winning activities.
  • Promoting effective health and safety practices within the team.
What you will bring to us:
  • Experience and expertise in civil engineering, likely at a Senior Engineer level or equivalent.
  • Ability to produce compliant, high-quality engineering solutions independently and supervise others.
  • Knowledge of health, safety, and welfare management, including relevant regulations and systems.
  • Experience acting as the main engineering contact on projects, e.g., CRE for Network Rail schemes.
  • Understanding of design and specification processes, with the ability to review and advise on designs.
  • Proficiency with relevant software and analytical tools, with good review skills.
  • Strong understanding of CDM, risk assessment, hazard management, and mitigation.
  • Capable of acting as Principal Designer on suitable projects.
  • People management skills, capable of leading a medium-sized technical team.
  • Incorporated or Chartered status, or equivalent, preferred or required for specific contracts.
  • What we can offer you:

At Amey, our biggest asset is our people. We offer flexibility, career development, benefits, and support to help you succeed. Our progression framework supports your career milestones, with mentoring and professional qualification recognition bonuses.

Work-life balance and flexibility are priorities, with options for hybrid, part-time, and flexible working patterns. We have offices across the UK and are open to discussing suitable arrangements.

Benefits include health cash plans, GP access, wellbeing programs, dental vouchers, and more.
