Job summary

The Wellcome Sanger Institute is seeking a Principal Staff Scientist to lead and coordinate AI/ML across the Human Genetics Programme. You will set strategic direction, work with statisticians, computational scientists and analysts, and contribute hands-on to predictive modelling and causal inference on multiomic and clinical data.

You will champion analytical standards, drive model development and validation for clinical use, and serve as a visible leader within Sanger and the wider research

Qualifications

• PhD in a quantitative discipline with substantial expertise in AI/ML for disease prediction.
• Significant track record of delivering complex research projects.
• Expert in AI/ML methods for high-dimensional biological data.
• Experience validating predictive models in independent cohorts.
• Code writing and data analysis at scale with good software practice.
• Experience initiating collaborations with clinical or industry partners.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic direction and oversight for AI/ML across the Programme.
• Shape analytical strategy and lead on model development and validation for clinical use.
• Ensure analytical consistency by sharing methods and standards across projects.
• Lead on projects in the Anderson group focusing on IBD cohorts.
• Represent the Programme in AI/ML discussions internally and externally.
