Job summary

Precision People is seeking a Layout Design Engineer to translate customer requirements into practical 3D layouts using SolidWorks. You will work front-end with Sales, turning enquiries into clear concepts and plant layouts before handing projects to the design team.

The role demands ~3+ years in applications engineering or similar, strong 3D layout experience, and the ability to deliver complete system solutions while collaborating with sales and customers.

Qualifications

• Around 3+ years' experience within Applications Engineering, Mechanical Design or a similar engineering role.
• Experience producing 3D layouts or designs for machinery, equipment or engineering systems.
• Experience using SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD software.
• Able to understand a customer's requirements and develop a practical technical solution.
• Experience working with Sales, customers and engineering teams.
• Comfortable looking at the overall system/layout, rather than simply designing individual components.
• Previous machinery, conveyors, automation, materials handling or similar experience would be advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Produce 3D plant and machinery layouts using SolidWorks.
• Take initial sales enquiries and understand the customer's technical requirements.
• Work with Sales and customers to develop the best overall engineering solution.
• Consider available space, equipment positioning, material flow and system footprint.
• Integrate company machinery alongside third-party equipment to create complete system layouts.
• Produce General Arrangement drawings, 3D views and technical concepts.
• Support the Sales team with tenders and technical information.
• Build and maintain a library of 3D machinery models.
• Identify potential engineering or installation issues early in the sales process.
• Work closely with Sales, Project Engineering, Projects, R&D and Production.
• Attend customer sites when required.
• Support ongoing product development and standardisation projects.

My client is a growing engineering and manufacturing business specialising in the design and manufacture of bespoke machinery and systems. Due to continued growth, they are looking for an Applications Engineer to join their commercial team.

This is a front-end engineering role where you will work closely with Sales and customers, taking initial enquiries and developing them into clear 3D concepts and plant layouts before projects are handed over to the Project Engineering team for detailed design.
