Job description

The Sun's legal team is seeking an editorial lawyer to advise on its editorial legal matters for The Sun, The Sun on Sunday, and Sun Online. Additionally, you will support NewsUK’s broadcast titles as an editorial lawyer.

Your Role:

As an NGN Editorial Lawyer, you will:

  1. Provide expert legal advice to The Sun, Sun on Sunday, and Sun Online, ensuring compliance with all current legislation, regulations, and best practices.
  2. Offer editorial legal counsel to News Broadcasting titles.
  3. Exercise sound professional judgment in advising editors and journalists both pre- and post-publication in a fast-paced environment.
  4. Collaborate with the legal team to identify and discuss significant legal issues, reporting to the head of department.
What we’re looking for:
  • Ideally, a solicitor or barrister with post-qualification experience in media law or litigation.
  • Experience advising on pre-publication issues such as libel, privacy, contempt, copyright, Data Protection, and reporting restrictions, as well as managing complaints and post-publication matters (preferred but not essential).
  • A strong interest in free speech issues, public interest, and investigative journalism.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain and present issues to others and contribute to their resolution.
  • Ability to interact positively at all levels within a legal department, reporting to the head of department.
  • Capability to work independently, demonstrate initiative, and be proactive, while also following instructions and supporting the legal team.
  • Commitment to supporting the company’s values, ethical standards, and principles of diversity and equal opportunities.
