Job summary

Cornwall Council is seeking a Litigation Lawyer to join its specialist Regulatory and Litigation Team on a permanent basis. You will be a qualified solicitor, barrister or FCILEx, or have significant relevant experience, providing advice on civil matters with an opportunity to develop advocacy skills in courts and tribunals.

The role offers flexible and home-based working with office-based requirements; main office is New County Hall, Truro.

Responsibilities

  • Advise on a wide range of civil matters including Judicial Review, Burials, general civil litigation and contract disputes.
  • Handle debt recovery, boundary disputes, injunctions and mediation, including drafting settlement agreements.
  • Provide inquest advice and representation; assist with enforcement of civil and regulatory trading standards.
  • Advise on housing, possessions, homelessness and housing disrepair matters; manage landlord and tenant disputes.
  • Develop advocacy experience across various courts and tribunals as part of a busy regulatory and litigation team.

Litigation Lawyer
The Role:

This is an exciting opening for the right candidate to join our specialist, small but busy Regulatory and Litigation Team on a permanent basis. You will be qualified as a solicitor, barrister, FCILEx or someone with significant relevant experience on the matters falling within the remit of the team. You will have transferable skills from previous experience which you will demonstrate in your application. We are a supportive and dynamic team, committed to securing positive outcomes for our customers and working alongside our dedicated colleagues across the wider organisation and group of companies.

Cornwall Council is a large and ambitious Unitary Authority, supported by an experienced and welcoming Legal Service that has a crucial role in providing specialist legal advice to all sectors of the Council, as well as some external organisations.

You will have the ability to work flexibly and from home, but with office-based working as required. Your main office location will be New County Hall, Truro.

What you'll need to succeed:

You will have excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to work under pressure and to strict timescales. You will be adaptable, flexible and ready to work collaboratively as part of an experienced team of specialist colleagues, giving advice on all aspects of civil work. You will have the opportunity to develop your advocacy skills in a range of courts and tribunals and at a variety of hearings. You will be enthusiastic about learning new skills and new areas connected to this area of work.

You should expect a varied and challenging caseload of civil matters. You will have the opportunity to advise on a wide range of issues and develop your own advocacy experience in matters including:

  • Judicial Review
  • Burials
  • General civil litigation
  • Contract disputes
  • Debt recovery
  • Boundary disputes
  • Injunctions
  • Mediation and other forms of alternative dispute resolution including drafting settlement agreements
  • Inquest advice and representation
  • Enforcement of civil and regulatory Trading standards
  • Health and safety
  • Trespasser evictions (including advice on gypsies and travellers, wild campers etc)
  • Fire safety
  • Housing, including possessions and homelessness
  • Housing disrepair and dilapidations
  • Landlord and tenant disputes
  • Building control
  • Anti-social behaviour
  • Negligence and nuisance

This is a varied and interesting role working with a very friendly but busy Service. Don’t worry if you don’t have local government experience as we’ll give you the support you need to develop and learn that area.
