Job summary

Barnsley Council in Barnsley is seeking a qualified lawyer to handle a broad range of regulatory litigation matters and to support civil claims, licensing, and enforcement work. Responsibilities

  • Handle a broad range of general regulatory litigation matters.
  • Work cross-cutting with Litigation team on civil claims and related proceedings.
  • Review case files, evaluate evidence, analyse witness statements, draft court docs.
  • Attend court proceedings, conduct advocacy, and brief counsel when required.
  • Collaborate with Safer Communities, Public Health and Communities teams.
  • Liaise with external agencies and partners under SLAs.

Salary: £39,152 – £50,269 (Career Graded)
Working arrangements: Monday to Friday (Agile Working with expectation of 60% office attendance / 3 days office presence)
Hours per week: 37
Contract type: Permanent

Basic Criminal Record Check required.
Prospective employees must provide a reasonable account of any significant periods (6 months or more in the past 3 years) of time living abroad.
Applicants must be prepared to start work with all necessary legal documents, including a valid visa; the organisation does not provide sponsorship.

Key Responsibilities
  • Handle a broad range of general regulatory litigation matters including environmental crimes, trading standards, health and safety, food prosecutions, warrant applications, closure orders and licensing matters.
  • Work cross‑cutting with the Litigation team on general civil claims, anti‑social behaviour, rent‑related possession proceedings, injunctions and committal applications.
  • Review case files, evaluate evidence, analyse witness statements, and draft court applications, orders and other associated documentation.
  • Attend court proceedings, conduct advocacy including contested hearings and instruct/brief counsel where required.
  • Collaborate closely with internal colleagues in Safer Communities, Public Health and Communities teams to provide advice, support and training.
  • Liaise with external agencies and partners as required, including Berneslai Homes under the Service Level Agreement.
