Job description

Are you a Landscape Architect with experience in Landscape & Visual Impact Assessment?

Looking for an exciting new role and want to work on a wide variety of different projects?

If so, we want to hear from you!

As part of the RSK Group, Stephenson Halliday are currently looking for ambitious and driven Landscape Architects at various levels to join their growing team. You will be joining a highly regarded and award-winning landscape planning, design and management team that has an extensive and enviable track record of providing expert witness services, and obtaining consent at all project scales, from National Significant Infrastructure Projects to local-scale development.

We offer exciting career opportunities in various locations, including in Stephenson Halliday / RSK Group offices in Edinburgh, and Glasgow, although we will consider hybrid/remote working for the right candidates.

We are interested in applicants who have experience in Landscape & Visual Impact Assessment, particularly for renewables (onshore and offshore wind, solar and battery storage, hydrogen), and grid connection (substations, convertor stations, overhead lines, underground cables) projects, but also welcome applications for those with experience in minerals, water, residential / commercial property, health/education, or other infrastructure projects.

Within this role you will conduct landscape and visual appraisals and assessments, feasibility studies, and screening and scoping studies. You will also have the opportunity to plan and design mitigation and enhancement schemes that align with project goals and environmental standards.

Key Responsibilities (all levels)

  • Be prepared to work flexibly, adapting to different project types, timelines, and locations.
  • Author comprehensive assessments of Landscape, Townscape, and Seascape Character, as well as Visual effects, both as standalone appraisals and for Environmental Impact Assessment Report chapters.
  • Knowledge and understanding of other technical disciplines sufficient to enable constructive assessment and design collaboration.
  • Plan and design mitigation and enhancement schemes that align with project goals and environmental standards.

Key Responsibilities (Principal and Above)

  • Lead and Innovate: Take the professional lead in landscape and visual assessment, guiding and mentoring staff through their professional development. Ensure the retention and growth of technical expertise within the team, fostering an environment of continuous learning and innovation.
  • Collaborate and Grow: Work closely with our Planning/EIA leads to expand our portfolio in differing sectors across the UK. Build on our stellar reputation for high-quality Planning, EIA, and Landscape services. This role involves driving the growth of our project pipeline, nurturing client relationships, managing resources, and ensuring the delivery of top-tier work through collaboration across Stephenson Halliday and the broader RSK Group.
  • Inspire and Lead Technically: Provide technical leadership within your specialty, setting the standard for methodologies and approaches. Inspire your team by promoting excellence, encouraging rigorous review and innovation, and maintaining the highest quality standards.

Person Specification and Key Skills:

Ideally you will have previous experience in Landscape & Visual Impact Assessment for renewables, grid connection, or other infrastructure projects. You will also have excellent report writing skills and work well under pressure and as part of a wider team.

A Chartered Member of the Landscape Institute CMLI or a Postgraduate or master’s in landscape architecture would be desirable.

A Full UK driving licence will be required for this role.

Company Benefits:

Not only will you join a supportive team environment with flexible working options, but there are also many exciting benefits as below:

  • Competitive salary (£40,000 – £90,000), payment of professional memberships, and flexible benefits programme including the option to buy additional holidays, health cash plan and discounted gym membership.
  • Participation in charity, social value, and volunteering initiatives, with one paid volunteering day per year,
  • Recognition as a Centre of Excellence.
  • Employee recognition awards.
  • Comprehensive support for your physical, mental, social, financial, and environmental well-being.
