Job summary

Currock Engineering Company Limited in Chelmsford is seeking a Labourer to support manufacturing, logistics and facility activities through safe, efficient general labouring, material handling and housekeeping. Job description

Position Overview

The Labourer is responsible for supporting manufacturing, logistics and facility activities through the safe and efficient execution of general labouring, material handling, housekeeping and operational support tasks.

The Labourer is responsible for assisting with material movement, loading and unloading activities, goods handling, workplace organisation, waste management, basic maintenance support and general housekeeping and operational activities. The role ensures work areas remain safe, organised and efficient while supporting operational requirements across the business.

Working closely with Production, Stores, Logistics, Maintenance, Quality and Operations teams, the Labourer supports the achievement of safety, quality, delivery and operational objectives while contributing to continuous improvement and operational excellence initiatives.

Main Purpose of Role
  • Perform labouring and operational support activities safely and efficiently.
  • Support manufacturing, logistics and facility operations as required.
  • Assist with loading, unloading and movement of materials and products.
  • Maintain safe, clean and organised working environments.
  • Support waste management and recycling activities.
  • Assist with goods inward, stores and dispatch activities where required.
  • Support maintenance, facility and housekeeping activities.
  • Identify and report quality, safety and operational concerns.
  • Maintain workplace organisation and housekeeping standards.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement, operational excellence and workplace safety initiatives.
  • Support training, skills development and cross-functional working where required.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Support
  • Support manufacturing and operational activities as directed.
  • Assist with the movement of materials, products and equipment throughout the facility.
  • Support production teams with labouring activities where required.
  • Assist with operational projects and improvement activities.
  • Support departmental activities across the business as workload demands.
  • Support continuous improvement activities across manufacturing operations.
Material Handling
  • Safely move and store raw materials and finished products.
  • Support goods inward, stock organisation and inventory control activities as required.
  • Handle and store materials appropriately to prevent damage.
Facilities & Housekeeping
  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping, cleanliness and workplace organisation across internal and external areas.
  • Remove waste and recyclable materials from production areas and ensure walkways, storage areas and workspaces remain safe and clear.
Maintenance Support
  • Assist with basic maintenance activities under supervision.
  • Support equipment relocation and installation activities.
  • Assist maintenance personnel and contractors where required.
  • Support facility improvement and refurbishment activities.
  • Report equipment, facility and infrastructure concerns promptly.
Inspection and Quality
  • Handle products and materials in accordance with company quality requirements.
  • Identify damaged materials, products or packaging.
  • Support product identification and traceability requirements.
  • Report quality concerns promptly.
  • Support containment activities when requested.
Non-Conformance
  • Identify non-conforming products and process deviations.
  • Report non-conformance in accordance with company procedures.
  • Support containment and segregation activities.
  • Assist with corrective action implementation where required.
Health and Safety
  • Wear and maintain required personal protective equipment.
  • Report hazards, incidents and near misses.
  • Participate in emergency drills and safety initiatives.
  • Support waste management and environmental compliance requirements.
  • Adhere to risk assessments, COSHH requirements and safe systems of work.
  • Maintain a safe, organised and clean working environment.
  • Use equipment and tools safely and in accordance with company procedures.
Skills and Experience Required
  • Experience working within a manufacturing, warehouse, construction, logistics or labouring environment.
  • Ability to undertake manual handling and physical work activities.
  • Good attention to detail and organisational skills.
  • Ability to work safely and follow operational procedures.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Positive attitude and willingness to support a range of business activities.
Desirable Experience
  • Experience using hand tools and basic workshop equipment.
  • Forklift Truck licence or experience.
  • Experience supporting maintenance or facility activities.
