The role would suit someone with laboratory or technical experience who is organised, practical, detail‑focused and keen to develop specialist testing skills within an international engineering consultancy.

The successful candidate will support the preparation, execution, recording and reporting of laboratory test work within a busy technical environment. This will include working accurately to defined procedures, maintaining good laboratory records, handling samples and equipment safely, and contributing to the smooth running of the laboratory.

Tasks and Responsibilities:
  • Receiving, preparing, splitting, tracking, disposing of or returning samples
  • Preparing materials, equipment and work areas for laboratory test work
  • Following defined test work methodologies accurately and consistently
  • Carrying out laboratory testing to agreed schedules
  • Recording, entering and checking test data
  • Assisting with the analysis and interpretation of test results
  • Preparing test work reports using company templates and standards
  • Maintaining accurate laboratory and operational records
  • Supporting the design, setup and operation of test equipment where required
  • Assisting with troubleshooting and improvement of test procedures
  • Maintaining inventory of laboratory supplies and updating stock as needed
  • Contributing to safe working practices, including the correct handling of equipment, samples and materials
  • Maintaining a safe, tidy and well‑organised laboratory environment
Minimum Requirements and Competencies:
  • GCSEs in Maths, English and Science, or equivalent
  • A-levels, equivalent vocational laboratory training, or relevant practical laboratory experience
  • Previous experience working in a laboratory, testing, technical, industrial or similar practical environment
  • Competence with Microsoft Office, particularly Word and Excel
  • Good attention to detail and accurate record keeping
  • Good time management, self‑organisation and planning skills
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills
  • The ability to follow procedures and work consistently to agreed methods
  • A practical, adaptable approach and willingness to learn
  • The ability to work independently and contribute as part of a team
  • A strong commitment to safety and high standards of work
  • Willingness to travel locally and occasionally internationally, where required
  • Applicants must have the right to work in the UK
Desirable Skills and Experience:
  • Experience of geotechnical, metallurgical, materials or process‑related test work
  • Experience in uniaxial or triaxial strength testing
  • Experience with COSHH assessments, risk assessments or laboratory health and safety procedures

In return, Paterson & Cooke offers a competitive annual salary for the position.
