Job summary

SGS is seeking a Laboratory Technician to join our busy environmental laboratory in Middlesbrough. You will analyse a range of samples from oil & gas, environmental monitoring, and related sectors, ensuring timely, accurate results.

Ideal candidates have an interest in science, strong attention to detail, and good communication skills. The role offers 37.5 hours per week, with progression opportunities in a fast-paced lab environment.

Qualifications

  • Interest in science, chemistry, environmental testing, or lab operations.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to accurately prepare, measure and analyse samples.
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and analyse environmental samples including water, soil, waste, and related materials.
  • Operate laboratory instrumentation and perform testing per industry methods.
  • Record and review results using LIMS.
  • Deliver high-quality, accurate data within deadlines.
  • Conduct quality control checks and assist investigations when results fall outside expected parameters.
  • Support maintenance, calibration and troubleshooting of equipment.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement and maintain high quality, safety and compliance.

Job Description

Join a busy, fast-paced environmental laboratory where your work helps customers make important decisions about environmental safety, compliance, and sustainability. You'll be analysing a wide variety of samples from sectors including oil & gas, environmental monitoring, industrial processes, and utulitiesensuring accurate results are delivered to clients on time.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing and analysing environmental samples, including water, soil, waste, and oil & gas related materials.
  • Operating laboratory instrumentation and carrying out testing in line with recognised industry methods and procedures.
  • Recording and reviewing results using our Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Delivering high-quality, accurate data within customer deadlines.
  • Performing quality control checks and assisting with investigations when results fall outside expected parameters.
  • Supporting the maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment.
  • Contributing to continuous improvement initiatives and maintaining high standards of quality, safety, and compliance.
  • Assisting with the preparation and dispatch of sample kits to customers.
  • Developing your technical knowledge through ongoing training and working alongside experienced laboratory professionals.
Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • An interest in science, chemistry, environmental testing, or laboratory operations.
  • Excellent attention to detail with the ability to accurately prepare, measure, and analyse samples.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Confidence using computer systems and entering data accurately.
  • A flexible attitude and the ability to remain calm and focused in a fast-paced laboratory environment.
  • GCSEs (or equivalent) in Science, Maths, and English.

While not essential, it would be beneficial if you have:

  • Previous experience working within a laboratory environment.
  • Experience working within a UKAS-accredited laboratory.
  • Exposure to environmental, petrochemical, oil & gas, water, waste, or industrial testing services.
  • Knowledge of Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) or similar laboratory software.
