Job summary

Intertek is recruiting a Laboratory Technician for our Derby microbiology lab. The role involves supporting food Microbiology testing, sample preparation, plating, incubation and day‑to‑day laboratory operations within a regulated environment.

You will follow SOPs/GLP, maintain records, and contribute to a high‑performing team. The shift is Mon–Fri, 2:00pm–10:00pm, with overtime and occasional weekend work. Training provided for growth within a global quality network.

Qualifications

• Good general standard of education in Science, English and Maths.
• Some laboratory experience would be advantageous, training provided.
• Ability to follow instructions, SOPs and lab procedures accurately.
• Good organisational skills with strong attention to detail.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
• Good IT literacy skills.
• Flexible and reliable approach to work.
• Comfortable working in a physically active laboratory role.
• Experience in food, microbiology or production environments would be advantageous.
• Science degree preferred but not essential.

Given our continued growth, we are actively seeking a Laboratory Technician to join our Microbiology Laboratory team in Derby, supporting the testing of food samples to ensure they meet regulatory and quality standards.

ABOUT YOU

The position requires a highly motivated and reliable individual who thrives in a fast‑paced laboratory environment. You will be comfortable working on your feet throughout the shift, following processes accurately and working efficiently as part of a busy operational team.

You may already have some laboratory experience or be looking to begin your career within a scientific environment. We are particularly interested in candidates with a practical mindset, strong work ethic and willingness to learn.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

To perform the role and responsibilities of a Laboratory Technician within a busy food microbiology laboratory environment, supporting microbiological testing processes and ensuring the efficient day‑to‑day running of laboratory operations.

You will support a range of laboratory activities including sample preparation, plating, incubation and general laboratory housekeeping, all in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP).

This is an excellent opportunity to join a growing laboratory team in Derby within a highly regulated food testing environment.

Shift Pattern:

• Monday to Friday
• 2:00pm – 10:00pm shift
• Work‑to‑finish contract
• Overtime available where applicable
• Occasional weekend working may be required
