Job summary

University of Sheffield is seeking a proactive Support Technician: Research (Cell & Developmental Biology) to provide technical support in a busy biosciences lab. The role focuses on Drosophila culture, tissue culture, and general molecular biology tasks, ensuring researchers have the resources they need and maintaining stock and equipment across a multi-user facility.

The role requires GCSE English and Maths or equivalent Level 2, plus biology lab experience and good IT skills.

Qualifications

• Biology laboratory experience with use of scientific equipment
• Experience with preparing solutions and growth media
• IT skills including MS Word, Excel and email
• Instrumentation skills with laboratory equipment
• Ability to work as part of a team and communicate effectively

Responsibilities

• Prepare growth media and solutions
• Undertake routine Drosophila fly husbandry tasks
• Maintain a shared tissue culture facility
• Perform stock control and requisitioning, maintain simple stock databases
• General laboratory maintenance including cleaning equipment and temperature-controlled rooms
• Deliver external equipment and chemicals to the lab
• Follow health and safety procedures including CoSHH and risk assessments
• Support undergraduate and postgraduate projects as required
