Qualifications

• Strong numerical ability and the confidence to interpret drawings and specifications.

Junior Quantity Surveyor / Trainee QS - M&E

The Opportunity

An established and expanding M&E contractor is looking for a Junior or Trainee Quantity Surveyor to join its commercial team. This role would suit someone at the start of their surveying career who wants practical experience, real responsibility and the chance to learn from senior commercial staff.

Working closely with Commercial Managers, Senior Quantity Surveyors and the Operations Director, you will help manage electrical and mechanical packages across a varied project portfolio. Your involvement will span the full contract cycle, from early estimating and procurement through to valuations, change control and final accounts.

What You'll Be Doing

• Help produce monthly cost value reconciliations, project cost reports and commercial updates.
• Assist Project Managers and senior commercial colleagues with subcontractor packages, variations and project changes.
• Monitor commercial milestones and provide updates on project margins, cash flow and overall performance.
• Prepare tender documents, cost plans, budget estimates, Schedules of Rates and Bills of Quantities.
• Support procurement for electrical materials and specialist packages, including switchgear, containment and subcontract works.
• Review subcontractor tenders and payment applications.
• Assist with interim valuations, early warning notices, variations and final account agreements.
• Help administer JCT and NEC subcontracts for building services projects.
• Attend meetings with clients, consultants and main contractors, keeping clear records of decisions and actions.
• Visit sites to carry out measure-offs and assess progress on works such as cable installation, containment and second fix.
• Maintain pricing information, cost databases and rate benchmarks.
• Support formal change control before and after contracts are awarded.
• Provide clear and timely commercial information to clients, project teams and senior management.

What We're Looking For

• A clear interest in quantity surveying and a long-term career in the M&E or electrical contracting sector.
• A relevant HND, degree or equivalent qualification in Quantity Surveying, Building Services or Electrical Engineering would be useful, but is not essential.
• Previous work experience, an internship or a placement with an M&E subcontractor or in a commercial surveying team would be an advantage.
• Strong numerical ability and the confidence to interpret drawings and specifications.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills.
• A professional approach, a sense of humour and the resilience to work in a busy contracting environment.
• A full UK driving licence would be helpful for visits to sites across Bedfordshire and London.
