XACT Placements Ltd. is partnering with a growing network and security MSP in Hertfordshire to recruit a Junior Security Engineer focused on firewalls.

Office-based role with regular client site visits. You’ll gain hands-on firewall experience with Fortinet FortiGate, supported through certifications and a clear progression path from junior to security engineer.

Qualifications

• Some exposure to firewalls or network security.
• Fortinet is preferred, but experience with other brands is welcome.
• Solid networking fundamentals: TCP/IP, subnetting, routing, VLANs.
• Background in 1st/2nd line support, an apprenticeship, a home lab or relevant study.
• Interest in cyber and network security with a learning mindset.
• Methodical approach to problem solving and good customer communication.
• Full UK driving licence essential due to client site visits.

Responsibilities

• Supporting, configuring and troubleshooting customer firewalls, mainly Fortinet FortiGate.
• Managing firewall policies, NAT, VPNs (site-to-site and remote access) and security profiles.
• Assisting with firewall deployments, migrations and upgrades.
• Visiting customer sites to install and commission security equipment.
• Handling support tickets and escalating issues as needed.
• Maintaining clear documentation of configurations and changes.

We’re partnering with a growing network and security MSP in Hertfordshire. They want to bring a Junior Security Engineer into their team who is keen to specialise in firewalls and network security, an area where skills are in demand and careers move quickly.

This is a genuine development role. You’ll work alongside experienced security engineers, get hands‑on with firewall technology across a range of customers, and be supported through certifications as your skills grow.

What you’ll be doing

• Supporting, configuring and troubleshooting customer firewalls, mainly Fortinet FortiGate
• Managing firewall policies, NAT, VPNs (site-to-site and remote access) and security profiles
• Helping with firewall deployments, migrations and upgrade projects
• Visiting customer sites to install and commission security equipment
• Handling support tickets, investigating issues and escalating where needed
• Keeping clear documentation of configurations and changes

What you’ll learn

• Fortinet firewalling in depth, with support towards Fortinet certifications
• Network security best practice across a range of customer environments
• How firewalls fit into the wider network, including routing, switching and secure remote access

What we’re looking for

• Some exposure to firewalls or network security. Fortinet is preferred, but experience with Sophos, WatchGuard, Palo Alto, SonicWall, Cisco or similar is equally welcome.
• A solid grasp of networking fundamentals: TCP/IP, subnetting, routing and VLANs
• A background in 1st/2nd line support, an apprenticeship, a home lab or relevant study
• A real interest in cyber and network security, and a hunger to learn
• A methodical approach to problem-solving and good customer communication
• A full UK driving licence (essential), as the role includes regular client site visits
