Job summary

Smith & Brown Cabinetmakers is seeking a Junior CNC Programmer to join our team on site in the UK. You will translate architectural designs into optimized CNC programmes for Homag woodworking machinery, creating and refining programs from 2D drawings and 3D models.

Ideal candidates have at least one year in CNC programming within cabinetry, knowledge of G-code, and familiarity with WoodWOP or similar CAD/CAM tools.

Qualifications

• One year experience in CNC programming in a woodworking or cabinet-making environment.
• Experience operating and programming multi-axis Homag machining centres (BHC, Centateq or Weeke).
• Knowledge of woodworking and joinery materials (MDF, solid wood, laminates).
• Understanding of G-Code principles.
• Familiarity with Homag software (WoodWOP) or similar platforms; willingness to cross-train with Alphacam or Solidworx.
• Proficiency in CAD/CAM software for design review and program generation.
• Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to precision and quality control.
• Strong analytical and mathematical aptitude for feeds, speeds and tolerances.
• Excellent communication to relay technical information to production team.

Responsibilities

What you'll do

As a Junior CNC Programmer, you will play a key role in supporting the efficient and accurate production of high-quality joinery components using Homag CNC woodworking machinery.

Specifically, you will translate architectural and design specifications into optimised machine programmes, creating, editing, and refining programmes, and interpreting complex 2D technical drawings and 3D Solidworx models.

You will determine machining requirements, tooling, and sequential operations to achieve the best results, whilst also assisting with machine setup and testing, and performing test runs.

Managing tooling databases, you will ensure correct tool selection and support operators to maintain tight dimensional and aesthetic tolerances across all components.

Additionally, you will:

• Maintain a structured and up-to-date library of all CNC programs and setup sheets
• Recommend improvements to machining processes, tooling, and programming standards
• Ensure all machine parameters, zero-points, and tool offsets are correctly set
• Assist in maintaining optimal safety, quality, and efficiency throughout production

About you

To be considered for this position, you will need:

• A minimum of one year’s experience in CNC programming, specifically within a woodworking or cabinet-making environment
• Experience operating and programming multi-axis Homag CNC machining centres such as BHC, Centateq or Weeke
• Knowledge of woodworking and joinery processes, including the machining characteristics of materials such as MDF, solid wood and laminates
• An understanding of G-Code principles
• Familiarity with Homag software, such as WoodWOP (or similar platforms like CutRite) or a strong foundation in Alphacam or Solidworx with a willingness to cross-train
• Proficiency in CAD/CAM software for design review and program generation
• Exceptional attention to detail and a commitment to precision and quality control
• Strong analytical and mathematical aptitude for calculating feeds, speeds and clearances
• Excellent communication skills to effectively relay complex technical information to the production team
• A relevant technical certification, vocational degree or apprenticeship in CNC Machining, Woodworking Technology or a related engineering field (preferred)
