Junior Clinical Fellow in Stroke

The successful applicant will join a team of FY1s, FY2s, other Junior Clinical Fellow doctors, Senior clinical Fellow doctors, 8 consultants as well as specialist stroke nurses and a stroke co-ordinator.

The stroke unit (ward 41) has 12 hyperacute and 30 acute/rehabilitation beds. The stroke service lies within the Department of Neurosciences. We admit around 1400 stroke patients a year, a dedicated 24/7 thrombolysis service has been running since 2008 and covers a population of about 1 million; we currently treat around 150 patients every year with IV tPA. A thrombectomy service is being developed.

A dedicated "one stop" acute TIA clinic runs 7 days a week supported by a daily, on site carotid ultrasound service and MRI scanning. Over 95% of high-risk patients are seen within 24 hours of referral.

Main duties of the job
  • Clinical responsibility for assisting in the investigation, diagnosis and treatment, under consultant supervision.
  • Expected to attend consultant ward rounds; present cases and discuss the differential diagnosis and management; carry out appropriate practical skills with patients.
  • Responsible for maintaining a full clinical record of patients admitted to the ward; required to produce a written summary of the admission at the time of discharge; will participate in audit data collection and attend clinical governance / audit meetings.

Job responsibilities
  • Attend the 8:30 board round with members of the stroke MDT.
  • Attend ward rounds with the registrar and/or consultant.
  • Daily review of in-patients on the stroke unit.
  • Initial assessment, with the Specialist Stroke Nurse, of suspected stroke patients arriving in the Emergency Department out of hours.
  • Arrange and follow up appropriate investigations and implement appropriate treatment plan.
