Job summary

Telford College is seeking a dedicated Job Coach to support students with SEN on the Supported Internship Programme in partnership with DFN Project Search.

You will work with students and employers to develop skills, confidence, and independence, providing tailored guidance and carrying out duties as required by the college.

The role requires excellent communication, ICT skills, and the ability to work with diverse learners in a college setting.

Qualifications

  • Experience working with young people with SEN and/or disabilities in education/classroom settings.
  • Excellent ICT skills and the ability to follow instructions.
  • Willingness to attain Level 2 Maths and English with college support.

Responsibilities

  • Provide effective job coaching to students with disabilities in the workplace.
  • Apply Systematic Instruction techniques while supporting students.
  • Liaise with the employer and college staff to support learners.
  • Communicate with students to understand goals and progress.
  • Assist students to set goals and overcome personal barriers.
  • Guide students in completing job tasks within the workplace.
  • Help develop motivation and job-related skills.
  • Coach students in job search techniques.
  • Develop social and life skills for students.
  • Advise on workplace accommodations for students with disabilities.
  • Provide feedback on progress and outcomes, both verbally and in writing.
  • Record progress toward EHCP targets and vocational qualifications.

About The Role

This role sits within the Supported Internship Programme at Telford College, a bespoke initiative designed for students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) who are supported by an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). Delivered in partnership with DFN Project Search, the programme provides young people in their final year of education with valuable supported employment internships, enabling them to take positive first steps into the world of work.

As a Job Coach, you will play a key role in supporting students within the workplace, helping them develop the skills, confidence, and independence needed to succeed in employment. You will work closely with both students and employers, providing tailored guidance and encouragement, while also carrying out other duties as required by Telford College.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure effective job coaching whilst supporting students with disabilities within the workplace.
  • Implement “Systematic Instruction” training whilst supporting students with disabilities within the workplace.
  • Liaise effectively with the employer and Telford College staff.
  • Effectively communicate with students with disabilities to understand their goals and ambitions whilst supporting students within the workplace.
  • Assist students with disabilities to discover and overcome their personal barriers and set goals whilst supporting students within the workplace.
  • Guide students in learning to complete job tasks whilst within the workplace.
  • Help in the development of motivation and skills whilst supporting students within the workplace.
  • Provide coaching in effective job search techniques whilst supporting students within the workplace.
  • Assist students with disabilities in developing social and life skills whilst within the workplace.
  • Advise on workplace accommodations for students with disabilities.
  • Provide verbal feedback to students in relation to progress & achievement, and provide written feedback as appropriate.
  • Take part in assessment activities, keep and contribute to record of progress towards RARPA, vocational qualifications and EHCP targets and outcomes.
SKILLS AND EXPERTISE
  • Relevant and proven success of working with young people with learning/specific difficulties and/or disabilities such as ASD/Dyslexia/severe learning difficulties/profound physical disabilities within an education/classroom setting for a minimum of 6 months’

  • Good General health to carry out the role
  • Physical ability to carry out moving and handling of students including pushing wheelchairs and assisted transfer from wheelchair to toilet etc and support students on sporting/outdoor activities both on and off site
  • Physical ability to work with students with challenging behaviour
  • Willingness/ability to carry out first aid and support medical needs for students with training
  • Willingness to work with students in all areas of college
Qualifications & Training
  • Level 2 qualification (GCSE A* – C, or equivalent) in maths and English or a willingness to attain these qualifications with the support of the College
  • Specialist qualification in Systematic Instruction
