Oxford Population Health (Nuffield Department of Population Health, University of Oxford),Old Road Campus, Headington, Oxford, OX3 7LF

The Nuffield Department of Population Health undertakes world-leading research into long term, chronic health conditions, operating large-scale long-term studies and projects to identify the causes, prevention and treatment of diseases that result in avoidable suffering for millions of people around the world. The administrative teams are closely integrated within the department and work with all levels of staff who are committed to the research and teaching undertaken.

We are seeking an experienced IT Support Engineer to join our IT team. The department’s extensive and data-intensive research projects require a robust and sophisticated computing infrastructure, supported by an extensive network of computers. The IT Support team plays a vital role in maintaining this infrastructure, ensuring that all research and teaching activities are effectively supported.

The department currently supports over 750 staff and students, managing more than 1,000 desktop, laptop, and mobile devices, along with hundreds of Windows and Linux servers backed by petabyte-scale storage.

As an IT Support Engineer, you will provide expert technical support and guidance to academics, students, staff, and visitors on a broad range of IT matters. Working as part of a collaborative team, you will manage incidents and service requests through our helpdesk system, providing assistance via email, telephone, and in person.

The successful candidate will have experience in first-line PC support within a customer-focused IT environment and be confident in installing, troubleshooting, and repairing hardware and software. You will bring strong analytical and problem-solving skills, a broad understanding of IT systems, and the ability to learn and adapt to new technologies quickly. Experience with asset management, including ordering and stock control, as well as managing small-scale IT projects, will be advantageous.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential, as you will be required to convey technical information clearly to non-specialist users. You should be organised, methodical, and detail-oriented, able to prioritise and manage your workload effectively while meeting deadlines. The role also requires a proactive, collaborative approach and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

A relevant IT qualification, such as a BTEC National Diploma or equivalent experience, is desirable, as is familiarity with ITIL frameworks and processes. Experience supporting Apple Mac computers, mobile devices, and working within a university IT environment would be beneficial.

  • 38 days annual leave (pro rata for part time)
  • An excellent contributory pension scheme
  • Family leave schemes
  • Cycle and electric car loan schemes
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • Membership to social and sports clubs
  • Discounted bus travel and travel loans
  • Weekly coffee and cake mornings, and social events throughout the year

This post is based in Oxford, offered on a full-time basis, and is fixed-term for two years in the first instance.
