Job description

Staffordshire County Council,

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a driven and enthusiastic individual to start a career in the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) team at Staffordshire County Council.

The team looks after approximately 800 ITS assets across Staffordshire to ensure that roads and footways are safe and accessible for road users and communities. The assets include Traffic Signals, Vehicle Activated Signs, CCTV and other ITS related equipment placed upon the Highway. In addition to maintaining the existing ITS assets, the team ensure that new ITS assets on developments and road improvements meet the correct standards and are properly installed.

The ITS sector is innovative and continues to make technological advances. The County Council are currently replacing all halogen signal heads to LED. This will generate significant savings in energy consumption and carbon emissions and reduce maintenance. There will be further technological developments in the sector as the move to vehicle electrification and automation intensifies.

Main Responsibilities

You will

  • provide support to the ITS team by assisting with the management, operation, design and development of the range of functions undertaken by the team.
  • follow a structured training programme to develop their knowledge and skills in the field of ITS, enabling progression in the team in future.

The team sits within the highways department working in partnership with Swarco and Amey LG to deliver the majority of its highway operations. This will provide you with both public and private sector experience.

The Ideal Candidate

You will need to be motivated, organised, able to prioritise, with a good level of computer literacy and attention to detail. Experience in ITS is not required, but a technical background is helpful.

This role requires the ability to travel across Staffordshire and occasionally outside of Staffordshire. A Casual Car User allowance will apply to the role. The role is primarily based at the Stafford office; however, some flexible working will be permitted as part of this role by agreement with your line manager.

The minimum criteria for this role requires that you have
  • ONC / HNC in electrical engineering or similar engineering discipline, or BTEC Level 3 qualification in a technical subject, or substantial experience in a similar role.
  • 5 GSCE's between grades 9 to 4 (A* to C) including Maths and English.
  • Demonstrable experience of working or studying within a technical / engineering environment.
  • Computer literate to the expected level required of the post.
It is desirable for this role
  • Demonstrable knowledge of electrical or electronic systems, or information technology engineering principles.
  • Knowledge and experience of liaising with contractors to deliver works to an agreed specification.
  • Experience of working in a multi-discipline team, and independently.
  • Effective organising and planning skills.
  • Technical drawing skills and the use of CAD based software.
Interview dates: Week commencing 7th September 2026
