The Lochaber Integrated Midwifery Team is seeking an experienced midwife to work as part of a small, friendly local team in the beautiful West Highlands of Scotland.

Lochaber, the home of Ben Nevis, covers a large, scenic area including Loch Ness, Glencoe, the Ardnamurchan peninsula and nearby isles. The population is around 20,000 with Fort William (population ~10,000) as the main town.

The role offers an exciting opportunity to practice midwife-led care and develop autonomy in a remote and rural setting. The team provides caseload care to around 200 pregnant women annually, offering continuity of care. Births are offered within the Midwifery Unit at Belford Hospital or at home for primary midwife-led care. For complex cases, the team works closely with NHS Highland Obstetric, Midwifery and Neonatal teams based in Raigmore Hospital, Inverness. The team works flexibly to offer a 24/7 service and includes on-call working.

Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive midwifery care to caseload women and support continuity of care.
  • Attend births in the Midwifery Unit or at home for primary midwife‑led care.
  • Manage complex cases in partnership with obstetric, midwifery and neonatal teams.
  • Participate in a 24/7 service and be available for on‑call working.
  • Travel between various work locations to meet operational requirements.
  • Work as part of a small, friendly, autonomous team.
Qualifications
  • NMC registered midwife.
  • Ideally degree‑level education or relevant clinical experience.
  • Proficiency in NIPE advantageous.
  • Good team worker, confident working independently.
