Job summary

Cyngor Caerdydd/Cardiff Council is seeking an experienced tradesperson to join the Responsive Repairs Unit. The role involves inspecting and quantifying repairs in Council-owned properties, with a strong focus on plastering and wet trades. You will determine the necessary repairs and whether to utilize in-house staff or external contractors.

The ideal candidate will have over 5 years of relevant experience, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to customer service. The position is temporary until 31st July 2028.

Qualifications

• At least 5 years’ experience in a relevant trade, such as plastering.
• Experience in responsive maintenance, assessing repairs, and resolving repair requests.
• Good understanding of general building and construction principles.

Job description

The Responsive Repairs Unit maintains over 14,000 Council-owned social housing properties, as well as transitional housing and temporary supported accommodation. The service helps ensure residents live in safe, well-maintained homes.

About the job

You will inspect and quantify repairs in occupied Council homes, identify the work required and raise appropriate repairs to maintain homes to a reasonable standard.

The role will focus mainly on plastering and other wet trades, including deciding whether work should be completed by the in‑house workforce or external contractors. Other inspection work may also be required.

You will ensure works meet the Repairs Standard, taking account of Council resources and the needs of contract holders.

This is a customer‑facing role requiring strong communication skills and a commitment to excellent service.

• Experience in responsive maintenance, assessing repairs, identifying causes of issues and resolving repair requests promptly.
• Good understanding of general building and construction principles.
• Strong communication skills, teamwork, methodical approach, analytical decision making.
• Understanding of equality issues and ability to adapt to change.
• Commitment to high‑quality customer service.
