Job description

The Company

Prax Lindsey Oil Refinery, located in North Lincolnshire, is a key asset of the Prax Group, a British multinational energy conglomerate dealing in crude oil, petroleum products and biofuels and is the only British refiner remaining in the UK energy market.

The refinery processes up to 5.4 million tonnes of crude oil per year (up to 113,000 barrels a day) and incorporates some of the most advanced refining and conversion processes in Europe, supplying products by road, rail, sea and pipeline.

The Candidate

We are currently recruiting for an experienced Inspection Engineer (Cat 2), to join the Refinery. This critical role is responsible for the inspection, condition assessment, and reporting of both new and existing equipment, ensuring ongoing compliance with UK regulations and PLOR standards. As the recognised Competent Person under UK legislation for the examination of pressure equipment, you will play a key role in maintaining the safe and compliant operation of the refinery. You will coordinate and direct subcontracted inspection and NDT personnel, particularly during unit shutdowns, and serve as the first point of contact for regulatory matters, all while upholding the highest safety, environmental, and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities Include

Inspection Activities:-

  • Ensure all inspection activities comply with relevant UK regulations, ISO/IEC 17020 accreditation, and PLOR inspection policies.
  • Advise on the Written Scheme of Examination, Postponement of Examination, and Imminent Danger functions in accordance with UK legislation.
  • Monitor, recommend, and report on the mechanical and structural integrity of the refineries pressure equipment, ensuring its ongoing reliability.
  • Ensure that new construction and maintenance works meet current refinery specifications and relevant codes of practice and are incorporated into the refinery inspection plan.
  • Assist in the assessment of non-standard anomalies to determine the plant’s suitability for safe, reliable, and continuous operation.
  • Coordinate NDT activities and thoroughly review the results to ensure compliance and safety.
  • Review and perform assessments based on inspection findings to analyze corrosion trends and ensure plant integrity.
  • Ensure timely statutory inspections of pressure equipment, providing reports and recommendations on any issues found during inspections.

Reporting and Documentation:-

  • Issue inspection work orders (IWS) and report any non-compliance related to manufactured items or plant modifications.
  • Ensure that all inspection schedules, computerised records, and hard copy records are up to date and accurate.
  • Regularly review and discuss inspection schedules with the Technical Inspection Engineer / Inspection Technical Authority and implement any necessary changes based on the findings from inspections.

Safety and Compliance:-

  • Report any potential cases of imminent danger or risk to the Refinery Inspection Engineer and take immediate action as required.
  • Ensure that inspections are conducted with the primary goal of minimizing the risk of process leaks that may harm the environment.

Continuous Improvement:-

  • Use professional judgment during examinations and routine surveys to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the refinery section under your scope, contributing to optimized plant availability.
  • Conduct all duties in accordance with established inspection procedures and policy.

Qualifications/Experience Required

  • Minimum qualification of HNC or equivalent in an Engineering or Materials-related field or must show working towards.
  • An Incorporated Engineer or working towards is desirable.
  • Ideally hold at least a Level 1 Plant Inspector qualification. (ASME/CSWIP).
  • Ideally hold at least one API qualification (510 or 570)
  • Strong technical experience in areas such as design, material performance, welding technology, corrosion mechanisms, metallurgy, fabrication, and testing.
  • Good understanding of mechanical systems, inspection processes, and corrosion mechanisms.
  • At least four years of experience in the inspection of petrochemical process plants or similar industrial environments.
  • Previous experience in coordinating non-destructive testing and conducting inspections related to process plant integrity.
  • Strong supervisory and organisational skills, with experience in managing teams and resources.
  • Knowledge of financial and budgeting matters, especially related to inspection activities.
  • Familiarity with international standards and codes of practice relevant to inspection activities.
  • Solid background in mechanical engineering and a good understanding of structural integrity and reliability of process plants.
