Job summary

NCIC in Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle, is recruiting an Infection Sciences Support Manager to run day‑to‑day operations and ensure high‑quality, safe laboratory services across infection sciences. The role includes quality management, IT applications, staff training, and health & safety oversight, with potential weekend/on‑call/early‑late shifts depending on service needs.

You will deputise for team managers in their absence and lead a team within the infection science laboratory to maintain

Job overview

Infection Sciences Support Manager - Cumberland Infirmary- 37.5 hrs per week.

Manage the day-to-day operation, quality, efficiency and scientific provision in Infection Sciences including quality management, I.T. applications, training and health & safety (H&S). Deputise for the immunology, microbiology and virology team managers in their absence.

Dependant on experience there may be a commitment to weekend working, on call and early/late shifts

Main duties of the job

Clinical -

Participate in the analysis and interpretation of laboratory investigations according to service needs.

Resolve staff problems in clinical judgements and analytical results / techniques in the absence of the team manager

Management -

Lead/manage staff within the infection science laboratory and associated support services, ensuring appropriate staff structures, policies, practices and competences are in place.

Performance manage staff through appraisal and development

Maintain Quality Assurance schemes for Infection Sciences

Administration -

Maintain a Quality Management System to ensure continual compliance with accreditation and regulatory bodies

Education -

Manage training requirements for all staff in Infection Sciences, undertaking the role of training supervisor, acting as lead for planning and monitoring.
