Job summary

Arup, a global engineering and advisory firm, invites applications for a Civil Engineer work placement in Birmingham. You’ll join an integrated team delivering water and wastewater projects and gain exposure to catchment management, urban drainage and pipeline solutions.

From day one you’ll contribute to technical delivery, calculations, drawings and modelling while supported by technical specialists in a learning-focused environment.

Qualifications

  • A Levels / BTech in Civil Engineering or related fields (e.g., Earth Sciences, Environmental Engineering).
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Python, FME, GIS is preferred.
  • Demonstrates curiosity, collaboration and a passion for sustainable development.

Responsibilities

  • Treat everyone with dignity and respect within a collaborative team.
  • Assess large datasets, perform gap analysis and plan future investigations.
  • Support technical delivery, calculations, drawings and modelling from day one.
  • Keep thorough records of meetings, workshops and technical outputs.
  • Communicate and collaborate both internally and externally, presenting work and welcoming feedback.

From day one, you will be part of an integrated team delivering innovative solutions such as raw water catchment management, urban drainage enhancements (including sustainable drainage systems), pressurised pipelines, solutions to the UK's storm overflow challenge, and improvements to clean water and wastewater treatment systems.

Our work ranges from small-scale civil engineering projects to novel nature-based solutions and major infrastructure programmes of national significance. You'll be supported by a local network of technical specialists who work together to deliver meaningful, high-impact projects.

  • Assessing large datasets, gap analysis and scoping future investigation needs. This can include historic drawings, surveys, catchment information, hydraulic models, reports.

  • Keeping good records of meetings, workshops and technical reviews, decisions and technical outputs.

Is this role right for you?

For this opportunity, we are seeking the following qualifications, skills and attributes:

A Levels / BTech in relevant academic discipline, such as Civil Engineering, Earth Sciences (inc. Geology & Oceanography); Environmental Engineering; Geography & Geospatial Science.

Skills and experience in Microsoft office, programming e.g. Python, FME. GIS.
