Job summary

Dumfries and Galloway Council invites applications for a Trainee Solicitor to start January 2027. This fixed-term post lasts up to two years and offers experience in both Court & Licensing and Commercial Planning & Property teams.

During the traineeship you will develop core solicitor skills, work with elected members and council services, and progress toward PEAT 2 outcomes under structured supervision and support.

Qualifications

• The successful candidate should hold a degree in Scots Law or equivalent and a Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice.
• Good knowledge of the broad principles of Scots Law is essential.
• Strong written and oral communication and the ability to work with diverse stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Gain exposure across Court and Licensing, and Commercial Planning and Property teams.
• Develop skills to qualify as a solicitor with appropriate supervision and guidance.
• Collaborate with elected members, clients and colleagues across Council services.
