Job description

Legal Counsel – Data Privacy, AI & Commercial

Oculus are partnered with a fast-growing global technology business seeking a Data Privacy-focused Legal Counsel to join its expanding legal function.

This is an excellent opportunity for a privacy lawyer looking to take a hands-on role within a technology environment, advising the business on UK, EU and international data protection matters, while also supporting the organisation as its AI capabilities and commercial operations continue to grow.

The successful candidate will become a key point of contact for privacy across the business, working closely with Legal, Product, Security, Compliance and wider commercial teams to ensure privacy requirements are effectively embedded into business processes.

The Role

The position will have a strong focus on data protection and privacy governance, including advising on GDPR and international privacy requirements, maintaining privacy documentation and supporting data transfer arrangements.

You will also have exposure to AI governance, cybersecurity and commercial technology contracts, making this a varied role for someone who wants to develop their career across the wider technology legal landscape.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide day-to-day legal advice on data protection and privacy matters across the global business.
  • Support the development and maintenance of privacy governance frameworks, including RoPA, data mapping, international transfers, SCCs and TRAs.
  • Advise stakeholders on GDPR, UK GDPR and relevant international privacy regulations.
  • Support the business with AI governance and emerging data/technology regulation.
  • Work alongside Security and Compliance teams on privacy and data-related risk.
  • Assist with privacy aspects of supplier and commercial arrangements, including DPAs and technology contracts.
  • Keep up to date with developments in global privacy, AI and cybersecurity regulation and translate these into practical business guidance.
  • Build strong relationships with stakeholders and provide pragmatic, commercially focused advice.
About You

We are particularly interested in lawyers with a strong data privacy background, whether gained in private practice or in-house.

You should have:
  • Strong knowledge of UK/EU GDPR and wider data protection law.
  • Practical experience advising businesses on privacy and compliance matters.
  • Experience with privacy governance, such as RoPA, data mapping, SCCs, TRAs and international data transfers.
  • Ideally, experience with DPAs and commercial/technology contracts.
  • An interest in or exposure to AI, cybersecurity or emerging technology regulation.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills and the ability to provide clear, practical advice to non-legal teams.
  • Strong commercial judgement and the confidence to work independently in a fast-moving technology environment.
Experience
  • Qualified solicitor/lawyer in the UK, US or EU.
  • Strong preference for candidates with a dedicated data privacy/information law background.
  • In-house experience within a technology, SaaS or global business would be advantageous, although strong private practice privacy lawyers will also be considered.
