Job summary

The Met Office is seeking two Foundation Scientists - Data Science for Simulation to advance machine learning approaches for weather and climate modelling. You will work on the FastNet ML Weather Prediction project and related Earth system applications, applying data science to real-world challenges and collaborating with national and international partners.

Role offers full-time 37 hours per week with potential for reduced hours or job-sharing, and a hybrid working pattern.

Qualifications

• Degree in a scientific or computational field (e.g., mathematics, physics, CS, data science).
• Experience applying scientific or analytical thinking to problems.
• Proficiency in Python and exploring/processing data.
• Interest in ML/AI and its scientific applications.

Responsibilities

• Develop ML solutions for weather forecasting and Earth system models.
• Contribute to scientific coding, data prep, analysis and evaluation with good practices.
• Prepare reports, presentations, and outputs to communicate findings.
• Collaborate with scientists, engineers and external partners.
