Job summary

A leading weather forecasting company in Wendover is looking for a Meteorological Research Scientist. The role involves identifying new product opportunities, performing verification analysis, and collaborating with development teams on innovative solutions. Qualifications

  • Master's or Ph.D. in Meteorology, Physics, Atmospheric Science, or related field.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work in a team.
  • Experience using Python ML frameworks for training models.
  • Proficient in Python ML frameworks for gridded and point data.
  • Knowledge of weather data formats (NetCDF, grib, observations).

MetDesk’s modern and vibrant offices are home to its dedicated forecast centre, utilising the very latest innovations in forecasting and monitoring technology.

Key Responsibilities
  • Identify opportunities for new products and develop these to the proof of concept stage
  • Perform verification analysis to understand forecast skill
  • Maintain and update existing archives and climatological datasets
  • Stay abreast of the latest developments in both traditional and ML-based weather forecasting
  • Work closely with our development teams to hand over prototyped solutions
  • Represent the organisation at scientific conferences and industry meetings where appropriate
Required Skills & Experience
  • Master's or Ph.D. in Meteorology, Physics, Atmospheric Science, or a related field
  • Knowledge of statistical methods to perform verification of forecast versus actuals
  • Experience with Git/GitHub and collaborative software development.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively both independently and in a collaborative team environment
  • UK resident or valid UK work permit
  • Experience using Python ML frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch to train ML models for gridded and single point data
  • Knowledge of the Transport and/or Energy sectors
  • Experience using common meteorological data formats – eg, observations, satellite, grib and NetCDF
