Job summary

Derby City Council is seeking a Traffic and Transportation Engineer to join the New Streets and Highways Development Control team. You will lead on assessing planning applications and proposals, evaluating their impact on highway and transport networks, and provide evidence-based recommendations.

You will collaborate with planning officers, developers and other stakeholders to secure safe access, efficient schemes and deliver sustainable transport outcomes for Derby’s growing city.

Qualifications

• Experience in highway development control and traffic engineering is required.
• Understanding of planning and highway legislation, policies and guidance.
• Experience in assessing development proposals and providing clear technical advice.
• Strong communication skills and confidence to work with a wide range of stakeholders.
• Ability to manage own workload while supporting colleagues and juniors.
• Proactive approach and genuine interest in improving transport and travel opportunities.

Responsibilities

• Lead on the assessment of planning applications and development proposals, evaluating impact on the highway and transport network, and provide evidence-based recommendations.
• Work closely with planning officers, developers, elected members, internal services and external stakeholders to secure appropriate highway improvements.
• Provide expert technical advice on highway development control matters within a busy development environment.
• Manage varied workloads and deliver sound guidance to support Derby’s transport objectives.
