Job summary

National Grid in Wimbledon/Croydon area seeks a mechanically biased engineer to maintain and overhaul equipment in electricity transmission substations. You'll work outdoors, at height, carrying out maintenance tasks on breakers, transformers and air compressors.

You'll diagnose faults, strip and rebuild components, install refurbished equipment and support emergency responses. Training at the Eakring Centre and occasional overnight stays are provided.

Qualifications

• recognised apprenticeship or NVQ/Level 3 Mechanical engineering qualification with fitting experience
• Strong mechanical maintenance, overhaul or installation experience
• Experience stripping, rebuilding and repairing industrial electrical equipment
• Confidence using hand tools, power tools, precision measuring equipment and torque tools
• Proactive approach to fault finding and problem solving
• Commitment to safe working practices and ability to work at height
• Full UK driving licence
• Confidence using a computer and tablet
• Residence within roughly 40 minutes of Wimbledon or Croydon

Responsibilities

• Strip, inspect, rebuild mechanical components
• Diagnose faults and carry out repairs
• Replace worn and ageing components including bearings, seals, fasteners and moving parts
• Install new or refurbished equipment
• Support planned maintenance and emergency breakdown response
• Perform routine inspections and condition monitoring
• Work on equipment including circuit breakers, transformers, high-speed tap changers, air compressors, cables and ancillary systems
