Job summary

Matchtech is recruiting an experienced HSE Officer for a major refinery shutdown at Fawley Refinery, Southampton (SO45 1TX). The role focuses on overseeing night shift furnace mechanical works and high-risk maintenance activities while ensuring compliance with refinery safety regulations.

The successful candidate will carry out risk assessments, safety audits, toolbox talks and safety briefings, and report incidents and observations. A NEBOSH or equivalent qualification is required.

Qualifications

• Proven HSE, Safety Officer, Safety Advisor experience within refinery, petrochemical, oil & gas or heavy industrial environments.
• Strong knowledge of mechanical maintenance and refinery safety standards and ideally knowledge of furnace works.
• NEBOSH or equivalent qualification is required.

HSE Officer

We're recruiting an experienced HSE Officer for a major refinery shutdown at Fawley Refinery, Southampton (SO45 1TX). Candidates will ideally have experience overseeing furnace mechanical works and high-risk maintenance activities.

Start Date: 14/09/2026.

The Role

• Monitor night shift mechanical activities on furnaces, ensuring strict adherence to refinery safety regulations and hot-work permits during night shift operations
• Conduct risk assessments, toolbox talks and safety briefings
• Monitor confined space entry, hot work and lifting operations
• Identify hazards and intervene in unsafe acts and implement corrective actions on-site.
• Carry out safety inspections, PPE audits and compliance checks
• Report incidents, near misses and safety observations

Requirements

• Proven HSE, Safety Officer, Safety Advisor experience within refinery, petrochemical, oil & gas or heavy industrial environments
• Strong knowledge of mechanical maintenance and refinery safety standards and ideally knowledge of furnace works
• Valid NEBOSH or equivalent qualification
• Experience conducting risk assessments and safety audits
• Excellent communication skills and ability to challenge unsafe behaviours

Additional Information

• Night shift role
• Candidates must be available to start on 14/09/2026
• 10-week shutdown project
• 60 hours per week, Monday - Friday and Sundays
• These roles are Inside IR35
• PAYE rates advertised
• Lodge support available for qualifying non-local workers
