Job summary

Phoenix Hospital Chelmsford is seeking a reliable caretaker to join our team on a 30-hour-per-week permanent contract. Reporting to the Patient Services Manager, you will maintain hospital buildings, grounds and facilities, ensuring a safe, clean and welcoming environment for patients, visitors and colleagues.

This hands-on role suits someone who enjoys practical work, takes pride in surroundings, and can respond calmly to maintenance issues as they arise.

Qualifications

• Experience across a broad range of general maintenance disciplines.
• Confident undertaking basic plumbing, decorating, carpentry and general building repairs.
• Ideally qualified in Building Services or City & Guilds Plumbing.
• Experience supervising contractors.
• Organised, able to prioritise competing demands.
• Comfortable working under pressure and using initiative.
• Reliable, practical and flexible to hospital needs.
• Health and safety conscious with attention to detail.
• Clear communication in written and spoken English.
• Physically able to lift, walk, and push.

Responsibilities

• Carrying out planned preventative maintenance and routine building checks.
• Testing essential systems including fire alarms, sprinklers and emergency lighting.
• Responding promptly to reactive and emergency maintenance requests.
• Carrying out general repairs such as plumbing, decorating, carpentry and painting.
• Maintaining records of maintenance contracts and expiry dates.
• Assisting and supervising contractors when required.
• Ensuring tools, stock and materials are available.
• Moving equipment and distributing post and parcels.
• Supporting waste and water hygiene management.
• Keeping gardens, pathways, and surrounding areas clean and safe.
