Job summary

Phoenix Hospital Chelmsford is seeking a reliable caretaker to join our team on a 30-hour-per-week permanent contract. Reporting to the Patient Services Manager, you will maintain hospital buildings, grounds and facilities, ensuring a safe, clean and welcoming environment for patients, visitors and colleagues.

This hands-on role suits someone who enjoys practical work, takes pride in surroundings, and can respond calmly to maintenance issues as they arise.

Qualifications

• Experience across a broad range of general maintenance disciplines.
• Confident undertaking basic plumbing, decorating, carpentry and general building repairs.
• Ideally qualified in Building Services or City & Guilds Plumbing.
• Experience supervising contractors.
• Organised, able to prioritise competing demands.
• Comfortable working under pressure and using initiative.
• Reliable, practical and flexible to hospital needs.
• Health and safety conscious with attention to detail.
• Clear communication in written and spoken English.
• Physically able to lift, walk, and push.

Caretaker

Phoenix Hospital Chelmsford | Permanent | 30 hours per week

Phoenix Hospital Chelmsford, part of Phoenix Hospital Group, are looking for a reliable, practical and friendly caretaker to join us on a 30 hour per week permanent contract.

Reporting to the Patient Services Manager, the successful candidate will play an important role in ensuring our hospital buildings, grounds and facilities are maintained to a high standard, while providing a safe, clean and welcoming environment for our patients, visitors and colleagues.

This is a varied hands‑on role, and is ideal for someone who enjoys practical work, takes pride in their surroundings and is able to respond calmly and efficiently when the maintenance issues arise.

What You'll Be Doing

Responsibilites:

• Carrying out planned preventative maintenance (PPMs) and routine building checks.
• Undertaking routine testing of essential systems, including fire alarms, sprinklers and emergency lighting.
• Responding promptly and professionally to reactive and emergency maintenance requests.
• Carrying out general repairs, including basic electrical work, plumbing, painting, decorating and carpentry.
• Completing general building maintenance such as filling holes, putting up frames and cupboards, and window cleaning.
• Ensuring maintenance records, contracts and expiry dates are kept accurate and up to date.
• Supporting and supervising contractors when required.
• Ensuring essential tools, stock and materials are available.
• Checking gas cylinders and ordering medical gas and liquid nitrogen, with training provided.
• Moving equipment and distributing post and parcels throughout the hospital.
• Supporting the management of waste and water hygiene arrangements.
• Keeping the hospital gardens, pathways and surrounding areas clean, safe and presentable.
• Providing practical assistance during emergencies such as leaks or power outages.
• Responding to facilities‑related emails in a timely manner.
• Supporting the hospital with office moves, refurbishments and other facilities projects as required.

About You

We are looking for someone who is:

• Experienced across a broad range of general maintenance disciplines.
• Confident undertaking basic plumbing, decorating, carpentry and general building repairs.
• Ideally qualified in Building Services, Plumbing (City & Guilds) or a similar relevant discipline.
• Experienced in working with and supervising contractors.
• Organised and able to prioritise competing demands effectively.
• Comfortable working under pressure and using their own initiative.
• Reliable, practical and willing to be flexible when the needs of the hospital require it.
• Health and safety conscious, with good attention to detail.
• A clear and confident communicator with a good command of written and spoken English.
• Physically able to undertake the requirements of the role, including lifting, walking and pushing.
