Job summary

John Watson School is seeking a Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join our all-age special school in England. The role focuses on supporting pupil communication, development, and independence, working closely with teachers, therapists and other staff.

You will plan and deliver learning activities for individuals and small groups, contribute to Total Communication approaches, and monitor progress while upholding safeguarding and inclusion across the school community.

Qualifications

  • Experience working with children and young people with SEND.
  • Experience supporting pupils to develop communication, language and social skills.
  • Good understanding of child development and positive approaches to behaviour.

Responsibilities

  • Support high-quality teaching and learning with a focus on Communication and Language.
  • Plan, prepare and deliver learning activities for individuals, small groups, and whole classes where appropriate.
  • Deliver communication-focused interventions to support pupils with SEND.
  • Develop pupils' communication, interaction, social skills and independence.
  • Support and embed a Total Communication approach across the school.
  • Collaborate with teachers, therapists and other professionals to achieve positive outcomes.
  • Model effective communication strategies and provide guidance to colleagues.
  • Monitor, assess and record pupils' progress and development.
  • Support the development and implementation of individual learning and support plans.
  • Promote inclusion, independence and positive behaviour across the school.
