Job summary

Amey is seeking a Permanent Highways Maintenance Operative for the Area 10 Strategic Highways account, based in Preston Brook, Runcorn. The role focuses on delivering highway maintenance across the strategic network, including temporary traffic management, routine works, and winter operations.

The position involves 42 hours per week on a 4-on, 4-off 12-hour shift rotation, with emergency call-out duties and site safety responsibilities.

Qualifications

  • LGV Class C Licence is required.
  • CSCS Card is required.
  • Personal Highways Safety Passport is required.
  • Good problem-solving skills essential.
  • Self-motivated and proactive attitude.

Responsibilities

  • Install and remove temporary traffic management.
  • Carry out highway maintenance works (routine and cyclic).
  • Perform minor civil works and environmental maintenance (e.g., litter picking).
  • Participate in winter maintenance operations.
  • Respond to emergency call-outs and standby duties.
  • Drive and operate vehicles and plant with general and specialist skills.
  • Conduct vehicle checks and routine maintenance tasks.
  • Record driver hours and filing of vehicle defect reports.
  • Attend briefings and toolbox talks; follow safety protocols.
  • Maintain high technical and safety standards at all times.
  • Communicate with colleagues, subcontractors, emergency services, police, clients and the public.

Job description

We have a fantastic opportunity for a Permanent Highways Maintenance Operative to join our Area 10 Strategic Highways account based in Preston Brook, Runcorn.

Working as part of our operational team, you will play an important role in the delivery of highway maintenance activities across the strategic road network. The role includes the installation of temporary traffic management, routine and cyclic maintenance activities, minor civils works, winter maintenance operations and emergency response duties.

The standard hours of work are 42 hours per week (average), working 12-hour day and night shifts on a 4-on, 4-off rotation.

What you will be doing:
  • Installing and removing temporary traffic management.
  • Undertaking all aspects of highway maintenance works including routine and cyclic maintenance activities.
  • Carrying out minor civils works and environmental maintenance activities including litter picking.
  • Participating in winter maintenance operations.
  • Undertaking emergency call out and standby duties.
  • Driving and operating vehicles and plant requiring both general and specialist skills.
  • Completing vehicle checks, routine maintenance tasks and cleaning activities.
  • Recording driver hours and completing vehicle defect reporting documentation.
  • Allocating and capturing time and resource utilisation using the relevant operating systems.
  • Attending project briefings, toolbox talks and operational meetings as required.
  • Maintaining high technical and safety standards at all times.
  • Communicating and liaising effectively with colleagues, subcontractors, emergency services, the police, clients, customers and members of the public.
  • Taking responsibility for your own health, safety and wellbeing and that of others around you.
