Barts Health Pharmacy Department are looking for a motivated individual who is ambitious and forward-thinking withclinical experience in Acute and Emergency Medicine to join our Pharmacy team at Newham University Hospital. The Trust is one of the largest and busiest in the UK and at the leading edge of emergency medicine. It provides a full range of local and tertiary hospital services across its different sites, including Emergency and Acute Medicine being delivered from three of its four hospital sites.

The post holder will be supporting the Clinical Services Manager in leading a team of staff in promoting high quality, cost-effective and safe prescribing. They will lead on the provision of pharmaceutical services to the acute medicine wards and the emergency department of the Newham University Hospital site.

The post holder will participate in the education and training for staff in the pharmacy team at Barts Health and will assist in the provision and development of clinical pharmacy within the service.

You will be supported to further develop your abilities as a senior leader via a combination of internal and external training programmes, alongside developing your clinical acumen.

Main duties of the job

To support the Clinical Services Manager in the delivery of the clinical pharmacy and medicines optimisation services to Acute Medical wards and Emergency Department at Newham University Hospital.

Manage the foundation training and senior pharmacists rotating into the specialty

To provide a high level of clinical pharmacy input to the relevant specialty as part of the multidisciplinary team to ensure optimal medicines usage and value for money

Manage drug-related incidents and complaints, both written and verbal, effectively and according to Trust policies

Support and advise the senior leadership team on budget issues relating to Acute Medicine and Emergency Care services at Newham University Hospital.

Person specification

Qualifications

  • MPharm Degree in Pharmacy
  • Registered with GPhC
  • Postgraduate Pharmacy Qualification or equivalent experience (minimum postgraduate diploma level)
  • Independent prescribing qualification, or willing to undergo training to become a non-medical prescriber

Knowledge

  • Understanding of GPhC revalidation requirements
  • Knowledge of medicines management systems at ward level with understanding of stock control systems
  • Up to date knowledge of legislation relevant to pharmacy practice, e.g. Controlled drugs, Health and Safety at Work
  • Excellent knowledge of the medical management and pharmaceutical care needs of Acute Medical and Emergency Care patients
  • An awareness of current national standards, guidelines and service delivery issues relevant to Acute Medical patients and Emergency Care
  • Knowledge of drug and therapeutics at Diploma level or equivalent
  • Knowledge of interface issues relevant to the patient group
  • Knowledge of risk management issues relevant to the patient group and root cause analysis

  • Able to complete documentation accurately with attention to detail

Experience

  • Significant Experience post registration in a hospital based clinical post
  • Experience of providing a hospital-based service to Acute Medical and Emergency Care patients
  • Demonstratable successful performance in a previous clinical post
  • Experience of providing evaluated information on drug expenditure
  • Experience of supervising staff and basic teaching in a hospital setting through training others e.g. trainee / junior pharmacists / other HCPs
  • Successful experience of managing & leading projects
  • Experience of successfully managing staff, performing appraisals and giving feedback
  • Experience of providing hospital- based clinical service within Acute Medicine / Emergency Care at Band 7 level or equivalent
  • Experience of managing guidelines and PGDs relevant to the speciality
  • Experience of managing medication incidents
