Job description

There is an exciting opportunity for SHOs (Clinical Fellows) based at Queens Hospital, to start at Barking, Havering and Redbridge NHS Trust (BHRUT) with immediate effect for either fixed term contract or substantive appointment. The post is designed to provide wide range of training to the prospective candidate to enhance their training and portfolio, and be able to progress in their surgical career in trauma and orthopaedics.

BHRUT is one of the largest Associate Teaching Hospitals, providing acute care for over 700,000 people from across 2 main sites - Queens and King George Hospitals, as well as peripheral sites at Barking, Dagenham and Brentwood. We are a major Neurosciences centre, and are undergoing significant further development as a tertiary referral centre for North East London and Essex, including additional critical care capacity.

Main duties of the job

The Orthopaedic Department at our Trust has made great strides in progressing to a gold standard centre for Education and Training. This is for Foundation, Core Surgical Trainees. The department in conjunction with Medical Education have instituted a Transformation Plan which has benefited FY trainees. The Trust has been chosen by Health Education England (HEE) and Royal College of Surgeons to be a Pilot site in London for Improving Surgical Training (IST) from 2018 which leads to exciting opportunities for the successful candidate.

It offers an excellent opportunity to consolidate and build on existing clinical skills in Orthopaedics. Experience in Trauma & Orthopaedics at ST/CT level or equivalent is desirable.

The department consists of 14 orthopaedic consultants providing both emergency and elective care across major sub-specialties in lower limb, and upper limb. The Specialist Registrar and SHO workforce form an essential part of delivery of high quality care and augments the senior grade structure around both training and service needs for both tiers. The department has developed an excellent in-house training programme covering intra-operative and theoretical skills around management of orthopaedic conditions. The Division of Surgery at BHRUT recognises that NHS organisations need to adapt roles to the changing demands of the market.

About us

Under the leadership of our Chair Jacqui Smith and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, we provide care for the residents of three of the most diverse London boroughs. More than half of our 7,500 strong workforce are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups and most live in Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge. We also provide healthcare services to people in south west Essex, and specialist neurosciences services to the whole of the county.

Our services include all the major specialties of large acute hospitals, operating from two main sites - King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen's Hospital in Romford. We also provide outpatient services at Brentwood Community Hospital, Barking Hospital, Loxford Polyclinic, and Harold Wood Polyclinic. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London.

As we recover from Covid-19, we're proud to be leading the way nationally in reducing the time our patients wait to get the treatment they need. The pandemic provided the drive for our teams to innovate and change.

We know we have more work to do to improve waiting times for urgent and emergency care, and our performance against the four-hour emergency access standard remains challenged, in comparison to many other London trusts.

We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre Radiotherapy Centre Hyper Acute Stroke Unit and dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital. We're also pleased to be part of the NEL Cancer Alliance.
