Job summary

Kedleston Group’s Leaways School in Clapton seeks a dedicated Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA Level 4) to support students aged 7–17 with ASC and SEMH needs. You’ll work with teachers and pastoral teams to foster a safe, engaging learning environment and deliver targeted interventions.

The role focuses on adapting activities, monitoring progress, and helping with lesson coverage and resource preparation while upholding safeguarding and welfare commitments.

Qualifications

• HLTA qualification or equivalent experience.
• Experience as a teaching assistant or in similar educational support roles.
• Experience with SEMH and/or ASC needs.

Responsibilities

• Support teachers in planning and delivering lessons for students with ASC/SEMH.
• Create a safe, inclusive learning environment for all students.
• Deliver targeted 1:1 and small group interventions to support development.
• Adapt activities using therapeutic, communication and behaviour strategies.

Are you passionate about supporting young minds and making a real difference in the classroom?

We’re looking for a dedicated, experienced, energetic, and caring Higher Level Teaching Assistant to join our fantastic team!

What you’ll be doing as a Higher Level Teaching Assistant:

• Support teachers in planning and delivering engaging lessons tailored to students with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and Social Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
• Assist teachers and pastoral teams to create a safe, engaging and inclusive learning environment where all students can thrive.
• Deliver targeted 1:1 and small group interventions, supporting students' academic, social, emotional and behavioural development.
• Adapt learning activities and resources to meet individual needs, using therapeutic, communication and behaviour support strategies.
• Monitoring student progress including assessing, recording, and reporting on student achievements.
• Cover lessons in the absence of the class teacher.
• Assist in the preparation of learning materials and classroom resources.

What we’re looking for:

• HLTA qualification or equivalent experience.
• Previous experience working as a teaching assistant or in a similar educational support role
• Experience working with students with SEMH and/or ASC needs.
• Strong understanding of child development, autism strategies, and trauma-informed approaches.
• Strong understanding of child development and the primary/secondary curriculum.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to manage behaviour effectively and support diverse learning needs.
• Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
• A proactive and positive approach to supporting student learning.

Who are we?

Leaways School is an independent specialist day school in Clapton, for children and young people aged between the ages of 7 and 17. The school provides a safe learning environment for children and young people withsocial, emotional and mental health needs including autism and anEHC Plan. We also have a dedicated primary unit taking children from 7 years old. We aim to offer as close to a mainstream experience as possible but provide the additional care and support needed around each young person to enable them to thrive.
