Job summary

Red Kite School in Princes Risborough seeks an experienced Higher Level Teaching Assistant to mentor colleagues and support pupils with SEMH needs. You’ll lead learning, work with therapists and teachers, and help pupils reach their full potential in a therapeutic, nurturing environment.

This is a permanent role, 40 hours per week, starting January 2027. A Level 3 HLTA qualification and GCSEs in English/Maths are required. UK applicants only; sponsorship not available.

Qualifications

  • Holds a recognised Level 3 HLTA qualification or equivalent teaching qualification.
  • GCSE English and Maths at grade 4/C or above (or equivalent).
  • Experience in SEMH or specialist education setting.
  • Confident delivering lessons and leading interventions.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver engaging lessons and planned learning activities, including class cover when required.
  • Support SEMH pupils to access learning and achieve individual goals.
  • Use therapeutic approaches to promote positive behaviour and emotional regulation.
  • Monitor and record pupil progress with feedback to teachers.
  • Develop personalised learning, behaviour and pastoral support plans.
  • Mentor and support other Teaching Assistants and share best practice.
  • Collaborate with teachers, therapists, families and external professionals.
  • Create a calm, inclusive learning environment where pupils feel safe and motivated.

About the Role

Working in a therapeutic, nurturing environment, you'll have the opportunity to lead learning, deliver engaging lessons, mentor colleagues and work alongside experienced teachers, therapists and pastoral staff to help every pupil reach their full potential.

What you will be doing:
  • Deliver engaging lessons, interventions and planned learning activities, including covering classes when required.
  • Support pupils with SEMH needs to access learning, build confidence and achieve their individual goals.
  • Use therapeutic, trauma-informed approaches to promote positive behaviour and emotional regulation.
  • Monitor, assess and record pupil progress, providing meaningful feedback to teachers and the wider team.
  • Help develop and implement personalised learning, behaviour and pastoral support plans.
  • Mentor and support Teaching Assistants, sharing best practice and promoting high-quality classroom support.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, families and external professionals to achieve the best possible outcomes for every pupil.
  • Create a calm, inclusive and inspiring learning environment where pupils feel safe, respected and motivated to succeed.
What you will bring:

We're looking for someone who:

  • Holds a recognised Level 3 HLTA qualification or an equivalent teaching qualification.
  • Has GCSE English and Maths (Grade 4/C or above, or equivalent).
  • Has experience working within an SEMH or specialist education setting.
  • Is confident delivering lessons, leading interventions and supporting pupils with a wide range of learning and behavioural needs.
  • Can build positive, trusting relationships with pupils through a therapeutic, nurturing approach.
  • Is an excellent communicator who enjoys working collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Is organised, resilient and passionate about helping every young person achieve their full potential.

Red Kite School is an independent special school for up to 60 young people aged 11-18 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
